3.) As we used observational data to try to make causal claims, we used Oster bounds to assess how likely it is that unobserved factors have biased our findings.
I like this approach as it moves beyond a binary understanding of whether or not an association is causal.

2.) We combined micro-level and macro-level policy data in comparative analysis of institutional context. This provides a stricter test of the policy mechanisms, and is more informative exactly how policies operate.

I particularly like this paper for (at least!) three reasons.
1.) We introduce the context of family policy to understanding cross-national variation in NEET rates. This broadens policy options beyond the school-to-work nexus, emphasising aspects of gender and family.

"By consolidating social policies and the work of public and non-profit organisations, the rEUsilience project represents a big step towards ensuring that policy decisions provide families with the support they need to navigate an often challenging world."

"Many policies that aim to build up Europeโs resilience fail to consider the needs and challenges of families. The rEUsilience project saw this as a blind spot, as most people live within a family setting."

The gendered nature of single motherhood means they should be an integral part of analyses of gender equality, including those related to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The majority of single parents are employed, while also providing the bulk of care-work for their children. Single mothers often make tremendous efforts to manage or improve their situation.

In my presentation, I brought to the forefront that single mothers are almost completely absent in the ongoing evaluations of the #BeijingDeclaration and the appraisal review on progress in the #PlatformforAction โย mentioning single mothers only twice.

Not only is it essential to take this evidence into account for effective policy making, it also opens up new directions of thought for improving the situation of single mothers.

Our evidence shows that single mothers make tremendous efforts to manage or improve their situation, but are often constrained by gendered inequality, by events earlier in their life-course, and the compounding of multiple risk factors.

I will contribute to an event called โLeave no single mother behindโ, organised by Dutch NGO Single SuperMom. During this event I will present my research on the situation of single mothers, and discuss policy implications โ in part based on @reusilience.bsky.social
