It’s funny, because part of the answer to this is “…maps” but the other part is that I think people just had to have more of a sense of the roads in the area where they lived than we do now. You had to have a kind of holistic head map that just isn’t a skill people build now.

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

Have you ever dated a narcissist? Someone with no morality but an interest in keeping you wherever you are? Someone who will apologize sincerely, tearfully, as they are emptying your bank account, stealing your work, breaking their vows? That’s chatGPT amandaguinzburg.substack.com/p/diabolus-e...

Different ways of thinking about restitution of stolen heritage? Move from 'repatriation' to sovereign states towards a recognition of craft communities and elite exploitation.

I also remember in my first big girl job with insurance, the company sponsored plan did not cover the gyno and your plan would be terminated if you got pregnant.

It’s not even just about people having healthcare. What Obama did he did for EVERYBODY. Before the Democrats passed the ACA, you could be denied health insurance to cover CHEMO if you had acne as a teenager b/c it counted as a pre-existing condition. PREGNANCY was a pre-existing condition.

Oh, wtf.

I wrote about the 23-year-old crypto bro with effectively no relevant work experience, who @alondra.bsky.social revealed is sitting in meetings, not paying attention, and then giving the thumbs up/thumbs down on whether they can get their NSF grants...

The real problem is bigotry is super well funded Diversity and inclusion was not and the bigots saw this

This is Koda. He is approximately 70% fluffy and 30% floppy. An ideal ratio. 13/10 would pet enthusiastically (IG: koda_and_wrigley)

A beautiful @nytimes.com‬ profile of Counterpoint author Lynn Freed, who sadly passed away last month. "The author of seven novels, dozens of essays and a collection of short stories, Ms. Freed was praised by critics for her spare, wry and unsentimental style." buff.ly/TQtSMKP

I think about this a LOT, especially when teaching history: if we’re studying history and a specific aspect of that history piques student interest, why not follow that thread? (eg last year after learning about the Treaty of Versailles, my Ss wanted to dig deeper into effective ways to make peace)

Genetic freak. The dodgers haven’t picked in the top 10 of the first round since Kershaw in 2006. Players who throw 100 like Paul Skenes and Hunter Greene are not available to them. So they draft guys who throw 93-94, push them to throw 97 with this weighted ball stuff, then they break. Every time.

the kids who are actually playing against trans athletes who aren't auditioning for a gig as a right wing grifter are way more mature than the adults crying about it

Btw, folks, @thebarbedwire.bsky.social is a must-read.

I need a really good new-to-me short story collection. Recs?

Fiction. Art. More fiction. A dash of poetry.

In light of the Unbound/Boundless situation (which I am not involved in) here’s a list of the warning signs the three times publishers did this to me. When you see it (no fault to the authors for sticking it out!) you may want to start preparing to sever the relationship.

PERIOD PERIOD PERIOD!!!! I have been invited to so many podcasts and such to debate slew foot, knuckle dragging ass conspiracy theorists and I’ll be GODDAMNED. I am an epidemiologist. I am a scientist. I have 3 degrees. I don’t throw my credentials to swine

After three months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, a Filipino green-card holder who had been arrested at Seattle-Tacoma Airport has finally gone home.

On the three-year anniversary of the verdict in Depp v. Heard, I wrote about realizing the terrible truth that she was, in fact, the victim—and seeing the DARVO playbook weaponized against endless women online and in the courts ever since. spitfirenews.com/p/what-we-di...

I will never understand why anyone thought that man could do better than NASA at NASAing. We deserve a publicly funded space agency.

“In a democracy that works, the truth should do it, but during my eight years’ at the Observer I had my first close encounter with the radical fact that democracy the way we have and practice it does not produce sufficient justice.” —RIP Ronnie Dugger www.texasobserver.org/ronnie-dugge...

For years, I've been dream casting a Wes Anderson Twelfth Night movie. FINALLY, the perfect Sir Andrew has entered the equation: Michael Cera.

This world. 😞

Also heard the great point on a panel on this subject at the @edwriters.bsky.social conference that very few publications are paying attention to community colleges, which enroll much high rates of 1st and 2nd gen immigrants (and undocumented students) compared to expensive private universities

This no-kill animal shelter is in desperate need of kitten food, kitten milk replacement, and other supplies. If you post a screenshot in my replies showing that you donated at least $10 (even as a Chewy gift card), I'll answer a style-related question for you. Donation info in their thread.

I am just so blown away by the early reviews two of my writing compadres got for their brand new books. Genuinely so happy for them. And publishers slept on both! Must be allergic to money and taste. If #scifi is your thing, get Beneath a Sun Deprived Sky and Orphan Pods. #books #booksky

Y’all. I may have just successfully unhooked myself from an O365 subscription with the purchase of a standalone Word. Please stand by. youtu.be/i9flhhwkTTA?...

The Criterion Channel is running a salute to Gene Hackman. So, if you ever wanted to have a Gene Hackman film festival for yourself, today is a good day! No, it doesn't include 'Superman: The Movie'--and it should. It does, however, incl 'The Royal Tenenbaums'--a delight & one of my very faves.

Y'all need to follow this account, seriously. It is a JOY.
