I think its the buds you eat before the leaves open - you left it too late! They have a kind of savoury taste. It's something for kids to do. The buds are only little and not unpleasant and trying them encourages interaction with nature.

They were trials of the first amenity turfgrass cultivars. Prior to this agricultural cultivars, bred for maximum forage production had been used and these were included in the trials. Showed the superiority of the new cvs. Published mainly in Journal of the Sports Turf Research Institute.

Yes, that sounds likely. I would be surprised if there is any variation in the turf types there now.

I haven't been back for 40 years but looking at google earth they were alongside the straight track which is still visible along the edge of the wood. There are now hedges? at right angles to the track. Some of the furthest area has gone back to scrub but some some still seems to be open grassland.

I ran STRI/NERC/ITE turfgrass cultivar trials at Monks Wood from 1975-1981. I wonder if there is any sign of them now. I suppose they may have been ploughed up.

It seems odd that the whole of northern England and Cornwall have been left out.

Yes, we have both. Taping the hole sounds like a good idea.

We are just about to put up a swift box. It hadn't occurred to me that tree sparrows might occupy it! We have them in another nest box each year. I guess if I delay putting up the swift box until nearer the time they come back the tree sparrows might already have got started where they usually nest.

He voted remain, I saw him say so on Good Morning Britain in an unguarded moment a few years ago in conversation with Piers Morgan (who also said he voted remain).

Not a good idea. The last time anybody (i.e Third Energy) tried fracking in North Yorkshire (Kirby Misperton) we sent them packing.
