This #FrescoFriday we’re in awe of the deep blue of this fresco from Pompeii. It depicts Mars, the god of war. He stands on a plinth adding a sculptural feel and is surrounded by bushes, trees, birds, and a rich blue sky that might be about to turn from twilight to night. #AncientBluesky🏺

The weather isn't even nice, it's *just* hot

A very happy summer solstice to you all from Stone Club ✨🌳🪨💫

Happy solstice, all!

Lilac sunset. Tonight in Glastonbury.

It's called Microsoft Outlook

The pond in the corn - monochromatic corn fields and winding paths. A recent favourite aerial embroidery of mine despite it's relative simplicity compared to others I've done... something just feels gentle about this one :) still available here: victoriaroserichards.co.uk/work/the-pon... #landscape

Graduation got me wearing clothes that sound like they're being described by George R. R. Martin

A wall painting fragment from Ostia Antica depicting two griffins. Dating to the 1st century AD, the fragment can be viewed at the Ostia Antica site museum. 📸 My own. #FrescoFriday #Roman #OstiaAntica

Found a massive privet hawk-moth in the greenhouse. When I heard the noise of its wings and saw it flitting about, I briefly thought there was a bat in there

#ReliefWednesday The Bridgeness Distance Slab, carved in the AD140s, marked the eastern end of the Antonine Wall, Rome's most northerly frontier. A dedicatory inscription is flanked by two reliefs which juxtapose military carnage and peaceful piety. (1/3)

This is genuinely amazing. Only 719 views? It should already have thousands! #DoctorWho #WhoSky

🌿 It’s #FrescoFriday and today we honour Agriculture in all her divine manifestations. This figure with her basket of first fruits and the hints of a plough is fairly strutting into the weekend! #AncientBluesky🏺

Decided to give up on the "stopped here" and "passed here" (green and blue) categories because I've been on so many car and train journeys that there would be a network criss-crossing the country whose precise routes would take a lot of work to plot out. Aside from that, I think (?) this is accurate

#FrescoFriday - Sun's out, flowers a-bloom; so this panel from Villa Arianna seems appropriate, as it's typically been interpreted as showing Flora: discovered 25 July 1759. #Archaeology #Art 🏺 Image: National Archaeological Museum, Naples (8834). Link - mann-napoli.it/affreschi/#g...

Not watching the finale at the cinema, sadly, because the one Whovian friend I could feasibly go with isn't free, and I can't bring myself to travel all the way from my little village to a town with a Vue or Odeon just to sit on my own when I can easily watch it at home #DoctorWho #WhoSky

#FrescoFriday - A fresco in the Fourth Pompeian Style depicting Alcestis, Apollo and Diane observing the prophecy being read to Admetus. From Herculaneum, AD 50-79. In Euripides' play Alcestis, the prophecy concerning Admetus' death is that he will die unless someone willingly dies in his place.

Absolutely overjoyed to learn that the great Lorne Balfe is going to be gracing the Whoniverse by scoring The War Between the Land and the Sea. His work for His Dark Materials was its own calibre of composition, and seeing him anywhere near Doctor Who is a dream come true #DoctorWho #WhoSky

The light within. It was more like April here in Glastonbury today. Rain, dark clouds and then sunshine all in one walk.

Look what came yesterday! #DoctorWho #WhoSky ❤️❤️

For #MosaicMonday, an image of a man leading this fabulous leashed beast that Cassius Dio dubbed ‘Camelopardalis’, aka a giraffe. It was perhaps used for entertainments and may have been meant for a venatio - bloody animal games in the amphitheater. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 5th c. CE, Tyre. #ARTIC 📸 me

#MosaicMonday - A fabulous mosaic themed around the figure of Theseus: ca. 4th Century AD. The labyrinthine section is stunning. Discovered in 1815 at a Roman villa near Salzburg. #Roman #Archaeology 🏺 Image: Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Antikensammlung (II,20). Link - khm.at/en/object/52...

Folks with any reach on Bluesky, please consider reposting so I can find friends old and new: I'm Rob; I like fantasy books, maths and physics, ancient stuff and mythology, linguistics and music, British wildlife, and a whole bunch of other stuff. And I might occasionally mention Doctor Who

Oh, hello there

#FrescoFriday - One of the stunning female portrait medallions from the House of Leda, Pompeii (V.6.12). Perhaps a depiction of one of the Seasons, or - with what appears to be ivy wreathing the hair - a Maenad? #Pompeii #Archaeology 🏺 Image: Pompeii Archaeological Park

A summer evening

All I want is a castle on the Irish coast, a lantern-filled library full of centuries-old novels, a raven to deliver and retrieve my post, an eccentric butler with a mysterious backstory, and an endless supply of various emotional support pastries.

Not to alarm anyone, but THEY'VE MADE A FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION OF PIRANESI

Goodnight from Mr. Brunt and Mr. Bane, drinking in the snug of The Red Wyrm and reflecting that repossessing a soul is a much harder job for a bailiff than reclaiming a vehicle. Goodnight from Windlass Lane, where the old well has begun murmuring of murder again. Goodnight from Hookland.

Had a visit from a lovely little damselfly earlier this afternoon

It’s Monday morning, but here are some bluebells from the weekend

A mayfly for May!

People have pointed out parallels between Lux and other episodes, but I'm surprised I haven't seen mention of The Idiot's Lantern In the early fifties, a creature of light descends from the sky, takes over an on-screen persona, and starts capturing people into its medium... #DoctorWho #WhoSky
