For years, I've long said that climate.gov's team of remarkable communicators (& their amazing blogs, which were accessible but did not "dumb down" the science!) was NOAA's best (& most cost effective!) public-facing extreme #weather / #climate education effort to date. This will be a huge loss.

The thing I need non-New Yorkers to understand about why we always have shit mayors, is that the majority of our population is in the outer boroughs, and more than 1.5 miles from Manhattan is basically Trump town: North Bronx, Eastern Queens, South Brooklyn, all of Staten Island.

Imagine being active on Twitter, the site that is a festering cesspool of racism, far-right ideology, misogyny, etc. & where opinions running counter to the owner are deboosted, and arguing that Bluesky is super toxic because some leftists get feisty. Really demonstrates how Twitter cooks your brain

Something that I think weighs on many is that everyone knows that if ever the Democrats were fully in power at the Federal level again, they will not immediately move to reverse what has been destroyed and build something new. This reality just sits out there like an anchor.

I've focused a lot of energy on grant & job losses within academia lately. Glad that the @chronphilanthropy.bsky.social has launched a nonprofit job loss tracker, including a form to contribute your own data www.philanthropy.com/article/10-0... (h/t @paulacroxson.bsky.social(

NYT: Placing a reporter with protesters or migrant families would be biased. So we embedded one with ICE.

I keep coming back to this: a lot of people out here demanding more foresight and self-restraint from people facing down armed agents of the state than they demand of themselves in between their work email and Pornhub browser tabs

Historian here this is the Trump regime’s attack on not just historical knowledge but all knowledge. Lincoln said it best when it comes to this I would rather live in Russia where despotism can be taken pure and unadulterated without the base alloy of hypocrisy www.nytimes.com/2025/06/11/u...

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

*and* Musk made clear that, for example, abusers and harassers would not be punished. As demonstrated by the fact that YESTERDAY he personally quote-tweeted the guy who doxed me. “Why don’t they stay on the platform where we can ruin their lives?” Why don’t you shut the fuck up?

Black Immigrants are 5% of the immigrant population but targeted at 20% for removals, with Black countries the majority of ones whose TPS representation has ended . And Haitians OVERWHELMINGLY targeted in public baji.org/wp-content/u...

“Kennedy, a longtime vaccine critic, would have final say on who would get to fill these positions, if the contract terminations are not reversed.” 🛟

Adv. Hadeel Abu Salih (Adalah Legal Center) told +972 Magazine and @mekomit that the whereabouts of the activists from the Madleen flotilla, as well as the next steps the Israeli authorities are planning, are currently unknown.

Really Cool how nobody wanted to take this shit seriously

The weird, often whitewashed way the civil rights movement is taught (or not taught) seemed to convince a lot of people that nonviolence was met with nonviolence, instead of you know, dogs, hoses, beatings, death, etc

For decades marginalized communities warned about the militarization of law enforcement too. Is the literal military being deployed on protestors bad? Yes. But the police have tanks, y’all.

This is a cool AI “hallucinations” incident database that tracks court cases detailing jurisdiction, type of tool used, nature of “hallucination”, outcome, etc www.damiencharlotin.com/hallucinatio...

Solnit - « Behind these stories [blaming sexual assault victims, blaming Ukraine for Russia’s invasion, blaming liberals for the misdeeds of the Trump regime] is the assumption that some people matter more than other people, and that we who matter less have to pander to those who matter more. »

It is impossible not to commit violence when the state has ultimately the power to define everything you do as violence.

💯

Hey. An obvious FYI that I feel compelled to offer. Never trust the people who run senior care facilities. They often mean well. But they’re understaffed & people/loved ones can fall between the cracks. ALWAYS stay in close contact w/these places re: your loved one. Don’t ask me how I know.

I understand the urge but... immigrants are not only valuable because of contributions to the economy. This is damaging coz: 1. Contributes to commodification of immigrants 2. Makes migrants disposable & deportable when labour is no longer needed (esp periods of high unemployment & austerity)

Pro tip: do not call the cops to tell them that you’ve had a miscarriage in a state that bans almost all abortions. Glad to be quoted here along with greats like @drkbrandi.bsky.social!!

AIDS Memorial Quilt on display October 11-13 1996 on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Let us never forget.

I remember this. I have thought about how significant it was a few times recently.

The need to anticipate danger and further oppression is just the burden of being in a marginalized group. It’s not exaggeration and we don’t need to wait and see.

ICE and the Patriot Act are recent inventions that should have been done away with at the earliest opportunity.

“The University of Michigan is using private, undercover investigators to surveil pro-Palestinian campus groups, including trailing them on and off campus, furtively recording them and eavesdropping on their conversations…”

“Because of the immense power of facial recognition to target political enemies and indiscriminately deport any of us, and because the system’s racially biased inaccuracy is already causing wrongful arrests, banning facial recognition is an essential step toward preventing authoritarian overreach.”

The Trump administration has imposed unprecedented sanctions on four ICC judges in response to the arrest warrant for Israeli PM Netanyahu.

“In this brave new world of worker surveillance, innocuous behavior will be criminalized, safety will be weaponized, and the ability to exercise one’s legally protected right to organize a union will be endangered.”

People keep being surprised by things Native folks told them about because they are committing testimonial injustice against Native folks

Sweeps are not only inhumane - they also make it harder for people to be rehoused. Their documents are taken, their medications, the precious items that connect them to their history and identities. Sweeps worsen mental health and destabilize people, making them more vulnerable.

Philadelphia’s GPS monitoring of teens “has quietly evolved into an aggressive surveillance program through which location data are turned over to law enforcement agencies without a warrant and used in investigations unrelated to the teens’ juvenile cases.”

“Quick calculations showed that only a tiny share of Y&W’s workforce — just 1% — made 1.9 times the minimum wage, the amount that Nike said was typical.”👇🏽
