This isn’t like “US soldiers in Vietnam were great” because aaaaaaaa, just that a ton of resistance isn’t legible at the grand scale and the state has incentive to not do the work to make it legible

Like- it hit a point where the Army stopped issuing grenades (while fighting a war!) for a bit in ‘71

There’s a LOT of small scale stuff that doesn’t get a lot of attention because it’s bad press, tbf- a major reason the US has an all-volunteer army is that the rate of officers getting killed by their own (conscripted) men towards the end of the Vietnam war was becoming unsustainable

(And litigating THAT in a modern environment is comically far outside the scope of my competence tbf)

I would say history doesn’t bear out “keep a large subjugated population under indefinite occupation and inhumane conditions” as a path toward security but also recognize that you could make a (bleak) argument otherwise

Okay and why, in this scenario, does the US have this right but not the Lakota?
comment in response to

(And again to be explicit, the US’ current treatment of indigenous peoples is still horrible- “not actively committing mass murder with military force” is not a sufficient bar to clear )

If your argument is that the use of violence against civilians (which is horrific, to be extremely clear) negates a state’s right to exist, I think that is a coherent position but also the opposite of the one you’re trying to argue so far?

Like, there’s no version of this you’ve presented that doesn’t boil down to “our plan is to be an imperial power that holds people in bondage indefinitely” or “we plan on exterminating a captive population”

“The people we have subjugated do not like us and would be hostile if liberated and allowed self-determination” is not actually an excuse though?

Yeah like… “it has equal rights for all citizens, just not the people it has confined to a permanent occupation zone” is some real “you know thats worse, right?” shit

Nah, this is 100% a 35-45 year old dude who considers himself way more radical than everyone else at his office but keeps putting off doing anything with his local orgs because they’re all scheduled at an inconvenient time

And it’s very useful to the industry because cacao is dying off and it involves relatively little chocolate

I have backflipped out of so many business meetings with "idea men" who wanted me to buy into their game idea, design it, use my name to publish it or get it published, and then split the money with them. They're as common as garbage in a landfill.

Minimizing shit like this (and memory-holing that the photo was only the first snowball in an avalanche) is part of the “boys will be boys” culture that led to Trump being electable despite his history, please stop carrying water for Republicans

tbf until a few years ago this wasn't a concern, it's not like it was unreasonable to do, it's just we invented the infinite lie machine (not the only thing it can do but the thing it's definitely getting used for most) and now... blegh.

The number of people who've (unwittingly but basically irrevocably) put enough pictures/video/etc of their kids up out there on facebook/etc for scammers to do a much grimmer version of this ("hey it's me grandpa, i just need you to sign this real quick") keeps me up some nights tbh

it's from the Great Depression, for people who were too poor for apples, you'd use crackers and then lemon juice/cinnamon/sugar to make them taste apple-ish
i'm not saying it's a good idea just that the people who came up with it were out of options lol
