Never change, Penzeys

i dunno, feels like there's a bit of a gulf between "what is the best tax policy?" and "are concentration camps awesome?"

Just saw a comedian say "If vaccines caused autism then America would have trains" and I almost spit out my drink.

We were likely years away from making HIV a thing of the past. Humanity triumphing over one of its worst diseases Instead we'll live in a world where people continue getting sick because of a greedy few who didn't want to pay their fair share of taxes

Heavily armed paramilitary forces stormed a local San Diego restaurant today, deployed stun grenades against a crowd of onlookers, and kidnapped a handful of kitchen workers.

its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....

I cannot do more burpees than Emil Bove. However, I might be more qualified to be on the Third Circuit based on these two facts: 1. I have watched at least 25 law-related YouTube shorts in the last month 2. I don’t believe the entire government should exist to cater to the whims of a mad king

Science denying know-nothing GOPers are trying (and in some cases succeeding) to ban fluoride in water based on anti-science BS. A new study shows a nationwide ban would bring a 7.5% increase in tooth decay and cost almost *10 billion dollars* over five years. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

"Brooke Nichols, an associate professor of global health at Boston University, has estimated that these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children, and will most likely lead to significantly more by the end of the year."

The idea that the Culture War can be resolved is on its face absurd; the Culture War is entirely made up to be exploited by the GOP, it is not real, organic, natural, or popular. The only response is to reject its premises and cut off its tendrils

State Department Plans to Launch ‘Office of Remigration.’ The idea of “remigration” has a troubling history; it originally comes from far-right, neo-Nazi circles in Europe and is typically used to advocate for the forced removal of migrants. www.thehandbasket.co/p/state-depa...

This. A $2000 asset cap is cruel. It you can’t ever have an emergency fund. It means you can’t collect donations to replace your busted water heater or leaky roof. It means you can’t save up for a better electric wheelchair so you can get around.

Thanks to Trump's latest flurry of pardons, he's now pardoned most of the Republican congressmen convicted of felonies in the 21st century. The new total is nine — and counting. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Universities must teach what the administration tells them to teach. They must be an arm of the current administration, only teaching Right Thoughts.

22 years ago I pivoted from working on antibiotic resistance to pandemic viruses. Since then, I've argued that if we care about saving US lives in expectation, advance capacity for producing bird flu vaccine offers by far the greatest expected return on investment. ... We were so goddamn close.

This really *is* Liberation Day: The U.S. Court of International Trade this afternoon struck down Trump’s mass tariffs as unlawful. It’s a fantastic win for the rule of law, human freedom, and prosperity, and a deserved rebuke for arbitrary one-man rule over our livelihoods. /1

If you want a sneak peak into our future imagine the politicization of everything. Whether the government performs a function entirely dependent on whether the government likes you. You want your social security check? Small business loan? Let's have a look at your facebook posts first

Around D.C., the new going rate is well-known: $5 million for a one-on-one dinner with Trump, but gov-affairs execs have “no clue where the money is eventually going,” one said. Another told me it’s “outer-borough Mafia sh*t.” My new piece is out @newyorker.com www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

"The products you love are tangibly worse. We're richer than ever, especially after all those layoffs. We're also building giant data centers that cost billions of dollars to force new and bad features into products you're already mad at, at the low cost of "the environment and every work of art."

this is literally the arbitrary administrative power generations of thinkers on the right have invoked to support gutting federal regulation

Increasingly convinced that Barron didn’t get into Harvard

When I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes, insulin was the only thing that allowed me to eat a reasonable diet while still controlling my blood sugar. The only other thing that worked was eating <900 calories a day. While pregnant. Needing insulin is not a moral failing.

Being a real man seems tiring. I hope at least some of y’all get to be fake men, who are allowed to eat ice cream and hug their kids.

This contrast offers a good illustration of why the term "sanewashing" was introduced.

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

ICE agents going to secure courthouses to arrest “dangerous” immigrants are as brave as the Uvalde cops.

This bespoke exception for the Fed is one of the most brazenly made-up things I've ever seen the Supreme Court do (which is saying something). There is no principled basis to distinguish the Fed from other independent agencies. The conservative justices just don't want Trump to crash the market!

I know I sound like pure uncut lunatic when I say this but DOGE also allowed Russia to destroy decades of soft power infrastructure, and to allow its software to nestle comfortably inside government data. imho, we’ve not yet seen the full fallout.

Race animates a lot of ICE/CBP, but I can't stress enough how—as with all law enforcement—a key factor is sheer *laziness*. They're not tracking down drug gangs, they're going for the easiest targets they can find. Official hearings (citizenship, court, etc) are fish in a barrel to run numbers up.

This is absolutely terrible news. With the shifting regulatory climate (i.e., antivax ratfuckery), Moderna has withdrawn their application for their eagerly anticipated COVID-flu combo vaccine. This vaccine offered better protection than getting each shot separately. h/t @merz.bsky.social

“Wearing perfume or using a fragranced body lotion could be bad for health, a study suggests.” <reads on> “A study of four volunteers” “This study has determined…” No. That’s not a study. That’s “I got some mates into the lab and had them walk past the mass spectrometer for a laugh”

McGovern: "You are literally taking food off kids' plates to buy Elon Musk another yacht. I guess he's getting a good return on his campaign donations ... this is not policy. This is theft."

Unironically they should buy up the domains for about 60 defunct local newspapers in swing states. Hire two reporters to write almost exclusively about highschool sports and new restaurants opening with every 10th article about how the local GOP is screwing over people.

There have been over 1.2 million confirmed COVID deaths in the US. COVID is still in the top ten list for most common cause of death in the United States. How tf would no one be noticing all these supposed vaccines deaths? It’s madness.

This is exactly what I mean when I say that it is impossible to reduce friction, only to move it around. The text-making-up machine dropped the friction of "research" to zero, but every single person downstream of that "research" who has to act upon it now shoulders a double workload.

This is @blumineck.bsky.social and his content is awesome. If you aren’t on TikTok, you can find him on YouTube as well: youtube.com/@blumineck

There is no need for Medicaid work requirements because almost everyone who can work is working. What we are getting instead is Medicaid work *reporting* requirements, where people lose coverage because of administrative burdens.

A tragic weekend across the country. If you lost power due to these storms and are using a portable generator, make sure it's set up at least 20 feet away from your home or shelter. Portable generators can produce deadly levels of carbon monoxide in minutes. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
