I've recently started volunteering at Red Cross, training for how to support community members after disaster. Have met some great people and am learning some very useful skills. (Have not yet put the skills to work in response to a disaster *touches wood*)

Also met an ๐บ๐ฒ lady in a very small NZ office where I sat (6 pax). Her dad was an ObGyn at the hospital where I was born at the same time I was born (early 70s). Dashed home to check my birth certificate--he did not deliver me. For a brief time we wondered if we were delivered by the same doctor!

Very small world.
I am ๐บ๐ฒ in New Zealand for 20+ years. Met an ๐บ๐ฒwho went to the same Jr High and High School and who graduated between my older brothers; they had a few friends in common. Since I have been in NZ, I've only met a handful of Americans from the state where I grew up.

I learned a similarly weird factoid yesterday. Instant coffee was invented in Invercargill around 1890!

For reference, the population of Christchurch is around 400k it it had around 190k homes at the time.
There is loads of work that has been done on the recovery work and impacts on people and communities. Insurance also played a big role.
A very challenging and complicated situation!

Of potential interest, the city of Christchurch (NZ) lost around 10k houses in a series of earthquakes in 2010/2011. Loss happened over longer time frame than fires, but the same types of issues resulted (lack of housing, rising costs, fractured communities...)

(To be sure, heard nothing but good things about the Philipino folks and we couldn't have done it without them ๐). Dodgy contractors were folks who moved over to take advantage and make a fast $$. We are still dealing with some of their shit.

Rents were crazy for a while, not enough construction workers (a lot of Philippinos moved over to help), and there were some dodgy contractors in the mix.
I was lucky my house was liveable; repairs completed 5.5 years post-earthquake

I live in Christchurch where we had a major earthquake. Govt ended up buying about 10k homes in heavily damaged areas, and more than 150k homes filed earthquake damage insurance claims. Population is about 400k.

Looks like Bunnings may have a 250 ml size...
The pharmacy stuff may also be what is called 'rubbing alcohol' in the US. It's a lower % of isopropyl (Mom used to pour it onto scrapes, and which resulted in many tears)

We had significant damage to the sewer system in Christchurch after the 2011 earthquake. It turned into a bit of creative fun with developing backyard toilets.
Now there is a plan...

I loved it. Hearing the story told by the author is a true delight. The movie is fantastic as well.
