Someone said it’s a matter of ‘social maturity’ and maybe a thing that hampers the USA in having a nuanced view on free expression is an absence of social maturity as well as mutual distrust—our political culture now primarily rewards trolls and bad actors. So priorities get skewed.

Man, that’s depressing. Maybe what prevents New York from ever breaking into open ethnic conflict (besides the fact not everyone is like this) is too many ethnicities for that to work. But this isn’t true about parts of the Southwest, unfortunately. It’s nurtured anti-immigrant shit for years.

I am skeptical any human needs enslaved people to be successful— if that means have sufficient resources, live in a robust and flourishing society— but I don’t see how anyone can deny that coerced labor is an essential tool to amass riches.

LMAO it IS ‘daddy’s got your back.’ DYING! I formulated a similar theory about the Dem dream of a ‘wise, caring leader’ they project upon unwise and uncaring leaders. Yes, I also do not have a life history that elicits ‘daddy’s got your back.’ (not as relentlessly furious as some but no ardor).

There must be a blocklist for that I subscribed to because I was on Bluesky since before it opened up and I have not once a fat white man with his dick out or diapers or ANY dick. I’ve seen maybe two women’s butts max the entire time I’ve been on here and the photography was tasteful and artsy.

Yeah. This is how some people roll in NYC. Not everyone. The experience of living in New York does very different things to people. It’s not different than the ethnic conflict in the Balkans or anywhere. You get some people who can stay freaked-out ethnocentric creeps for generations.

Some things GOP does scares the shit out of people. This is partly why people who normally go ‘sigh, Hillary Clinton is fine, come on, don’t be picky’ are not as sanguine as they once were. Some milquetoast people are afraid and deeply appalled now. GOP extremism has shifted a few in a new way.

Yes. They are a large group of delusional people, esp. those who ‘feel good’ if a Dem is elected and want the feeling. It’s interesting to see who wakes up—it seems to depend on a) perceived interests, mostly economic and b) laziness or bad info sources and c) overall concern for others in society.

It’s norm violation but there are many things in play 1) norm about what claims count as a ‘factual claim’ 2) norm about what reporters can say on social media 3) frustrating tendency of the norms to lend themselves to misleading descriptions raising questions about the justification of the norms.

It’s violating the norms of US journalism, yes. Some question whether there’s an obligation to maintain the norms when the norms continually become absurd and work against truth (and when they also aren’t being upheld except for by a few , and are upheld only in a way that works against democracy).

Delusional people watch everything we need destroyed and think they can go back to some sort of comfortable modus vivendi with the Nazis and the oligarchs. They see them take everything and break everything—but somehow they can’t draw the obvious conclusion that we have to stop them.

He’s itching to fire on Americans the right has dehumanized with the MAGA. If he fires on people in California, they can sell that to his fans. But the ‘red states’ and ‘blue states’ are a made-up thing. Many people don’t want this happening all over America.

Can you say more about why? This is how they do journalism in countries that have a freer press that holds the powerful to account. In Guatemala the newspapers would literally call certain people thieves in 30 pt. font. Because they ARE THIEVES.

This is what they’re doing now. They are having a lot of success, in fact! Which will lead to more civil unrest. They are going for seamless oligarchic power. All these news outlets are fools if they think they are ‘safe’ by placating them.

I’m older so I saw them slowly take over EVERYTHING. They had total power, 30s-70s was mass struggle, racists lost some power (only some but this required much more democracy than we now have). They spent the last 50 years slowly invading all institutions and corrupting these. They now want revenge.
comment in response to post
Just like with everything the fascist method is a friends/enemies thing. They use the power of the government to instantiate power that way—benefit their friends (violent racists, people who bribe them, etc.) and harm their enemies (all those who sincerely believe in equality and defend rights).

I'm using left wing generously because I don't think opposing the mass kidnapping and detention of people without any due process is really "left wing".

I love that the absolute freedom of speech allows Nazis to demonstrate free and proud but when people rise against a US sponsored genocide suddenly it's not so absolute anymore

I don’t know how to do shit. I am not really good at strategy even in games. It just looks to me like some people seem to have an awareness for these necessary things to happen, and the more people in the USA develop that awareness, the better we’ll probably do over time. Many are in denial still.

That is what we’re being driven to. We need discourse and a political will to go along with it, as punches alone don’t work. We need a movement. The thing everyone said would happen HAPPENED. People said freedom for Nazis leads to Nazi takeover. And it did. The Brazilians aren’t making our mistakes.

Except I had a good conversation and found out things about the Brazilian concept of the rights to expression? Which was my goal. I want to understand it. It seems largely correct to me but people explained it in ways that opened my eyes to other things, such as how they changed the constitution.

A ideia é fazer como eles fazem em um culto religioso ou relacionamento abusivo e nos deixar tão confusos e desesperados que esquecemos quem somos e nunca pedimos nada menos do que uma migalha. Eles são como espancadores de esposas.

Yes, social maturity is the perfect term. If we try to outlaw hate speech, a bunch of rich racists will immediately create test cases to attack people who are not doing hate speech. We literally have too much open racism at the moment. There’s just constant racist mischief at work every second.

I’m only explaining why Americans will claim ‘a right has been violated’ even if there is no legal right. I do not think that is the case for hate speech. I do not think people have A MORAL right to hate speech. It’s not a matter of words—it’s a matter of causing harm. But in the US it may not work.
comment in response to post
No, I’m only trying to explain why the US press will think it is a matter of right, not of law so that if there is a law against it, it is still ‘a rights violation.’ But it might not be. They make this shit up all the time.
