An even more appropriate quote: “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.” Richard Feynman (context: the investigation of the Challenger disaster)

This reminded me of this (slightly modified) quote: "In philosophy, or religion, or ethics, or politics, two and two might make five, but when one was designing a [truck ]or an [rocket] they had to make four." George Orwell, 1984

I believe Hennessy and Patterson were quite influential both in pioneering RISC architectures and propagating the ideas in their book(s): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_P... Berkeley RISC-> SPARC en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L.... MIPS ARM was influenced by these processors.

The way it might make sense is if they have made small scale tests and the $60 million was for making large scale tests and they are assuming those would have been successful. Another news article explicitly mentions a trial: www.statnews.com/2025/04/15/h...

I don't know the current unemployment statistics in the UE, but I think that, for instance, Germany's industrial production is slightly lower than some years ago, so there should be spare capacity. Obviously you can't produce shells in a car factory (without reconfiguration).

This accident was covered in "Mayday" Series 14 Episode 3, "Vanishing Act". The passenger was interviewed. www.imdb.com/title/tt3572...

A rare counterexample: In this accident a passenger noticed that after take-off the airplane was not heading in the usual direction but didn't try to alert the flight crew because the pilot surely knew what he was doing. They ran out of fuel and crashed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varig_F...

Minor typo? "If Starmer is talking about social care, then what would he have done when acute shortages emerged and the previous government allowed substantial immigration for social care jobs. " - should end with a question mark ?

In the book "A Very Courageous Decision" about the "Yes (Prime)Minister" TV series, it is remarked that the "radical plan" "to eliminate smoking" which, at the time (1986) seemed so unrealistic, was largely implemented by 2015 (only the increase in tax was a bit smaller).

Typos? "and excuse the UK government seems determined not to make"->"an excuse" "if they succeeded in this parliamentary approval" -> "if they succeeded in this, parliamentary approval"

Well, exactly. It was decided circa 1945 that borders should no longer be changed by force, since the consequences are so awful. E.G. my city last changed hands ~961 years ago and I would prefer that it would not change again.

BTW, related to the characterization of populism: "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong."-H. L. Mencken

Typo? "These for pillars" -> "These four pillars" "and as fascists to the extent" - missing some verb? Krugman has written Trump is an atypical populist, since populists usually give something material (eg. subsidies or jobs) to their base .

If, on your next holiday you want some light reading :) , this is explained in chapter 6 of @astrokatie.com book: bsky.app/profile/astr... TL/DR: it is _very_ unlikely and if it were to happen we can't do anything about it and it would be painless and instantaneous, so no point in worrying.

There is a footnote [3] but it is not mentioned in the text. This also seems to be a typo: "2222/3". I don't know if it was intended to be "2022[3]" or "2022/3".
