Except for the immigrants who work for ICE. Of which there are a great many.

More to the point, accusing the Democrats of quarantining the Epstein files was a major Republican talking point in the last election. Number of Americans who remember this 8 months later: 1.

Thanks. It's been a long road from the logging town I grew up in, but at least I walked it.

I'd just like to report that I'm a old straight man, and I get this. My stock may not be worth much, but I insist on claiming it.

He was also 'way into tariffs and smashing trade relationships, and governing the economy by fiat. You can basically plot the daily drift of the US by simply reviewing the chronology of Nazi Germany. What the US does tomorrow, will be what the Nazis did the day after they did what the US did today.

Those should all be jazz records.

Or some exam, anyway. Even a basic high school civics exam would be a huge leap forward.

Well, it's not honest, is it? His history with minorities isn't complicated. That's the problem.

Hmm, hadn't considered that possibility. I may be slightly more active on .scot, so I'd suggest you mute that one to get less of me, or universeodon for more. Whichever meets your needs. Sorry for the issue.

Oh yeah! I should be the Buddha himself any minute now!

It's not deportation. When you send abductees out of the country to contract torture centers in the third world, that's called extraordinary rendition. (Newspeak for offshoring torture. Term and practice invented by Duhbya in 2002. We did nothing to criminalize it then, so it's back now.)

Don't forget: dictators the world over establish themselves this way. They declare ongoing, undefined "emergencies" to keep themselves and their families in power for generations. It's a well-worn strategy, and it can't be blocked unless national institutions take that power from the head of state.

ICE was seen in Olympia today. Photos on NextDoor and everything. We're also on Trump's list of target "sanctuary cities", released yesterday. So it's not just theoretical anymore.

Yeah, broadleaf trees in general, and alder in particular, are born to die in service to the forest. Awhile ago I looked up the large alder we all carved our initials into in the 70s. It's a tall stump now, with the rest of it in the lake and most of the bark rotted off. It was healthy back then.

Thanks for the good word. The thing about KOTH that's always brilliant is its firm advocacy of common sense and decency, and its courage in ridiculing every ridiculous thing, no matter whose it is. In the current cultural environment, one fears for the survival of a platform that grown-up.

Yeah, the grown-up treehouses tend to endure. But the real ones – kid-owned and mostly kid-built – dissolve incredibly fast. I think of the one my friends and I built in the woods. It got two, maybe 3 years of use, and by the time I was in high school was just a few boards.

No-one would get it, but we'd enjoy it without being able to say why.

Damn cat lost part of an ear in service, what the hell do these people want??
