To update: I happened to go by today just at the right time to talk with the homeowner. It's not a yucca but a plant known as Tower of Jewels that is endemic to the Canary Islands. He's planning on adding a plaque with name information since everyone is curious. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echium_...
