Yes. Other wrong ideas dominate us, too. Some economists say they’ve never met Purely Economic Person and point to facts. Other economists raise temperament to axiom and say “of course people are only economic." Temperament blinds to disconfirming facts all-sorts…

Elite disdain, yes, it's part of the problem. However, elite disdain is being used imo as an excuse for attacks that elite disdain does not justify, attacks sourced at least as much by other drivers.
Do address elite disdain for sure, while also addressing certain deep, inveterate grievances...

Wasn't SS sold as a super-pooled, super-productive investment that no single bank could do but a government could, yes, do? "Save so you won't be a burden on your children." SS wasn't sold as "returns to first investors from money of later investors." How did having enough children to pay SS enter?

This comment (even in Google translation) really captures, without saying the word, what we're given to look at here.

Such episodes could have to do with US vulnerability to scoundrels now. No peace & reconciliation means inarticulate malaise. Feeding people as fodder to the VN war wasn't only this episode.

Do we only assume we understand why leaders direct armies to attack other countries?
Why soldiers agree to attack when most are said to hate war since they know what it is and even join the other "side" for, say, a Christmas meal?
Why an attacked country is told by friends, "Don't attack back?"

One fellow says, "I'm king. I'm doing x. Nobody can stop me."
Another fellow says, "As king, I suggest you stay in your place."
The masses watch and wait to see which king "wins."

Wondering how many of these citizens (as below) are parents or relatives of people in the military.... A genuine wondering, pondering of how certain militaries would react if, potentially, ordered to take undemocratic action....

Disinterested from a witness: It looked easier for a person to take the pay & go to Vietnam than to go to Canada. Easier as long as the person wasn't bothered by the inability to recall when Vietnam had attacked the USA or by the inability to speak Vietnamese to tell others how to run their country.

Did red states vote against a system that supported them? If so, should we figure out why?
Do enough people in the United States appreciate the amazing tax transfer system that underpins the United States? Is the unity of semi-sovereign states taken for granted, when really it's no mean feat?

This article strikes me as useful for reading on the train. Good help. For example, the mention of the probing "How do you mean that?" said in a calm voice.
The article, which is not about being touchy, applies to any group marginalized as "other" and "not really us....

Tangentially on language... Is it just me or is it the case that people supporting DT have no use for the term anti-Americanism? They go in for global grievances (btw inequities can be named without grievance), but they don't use this term (which in any case is useless imo). Just a curiosity.

Not the same, but where we are, many rich parents make sure their high functioning kids are officially "on the autistic spectrum." Tax-funded schools for kids "on the spectrum" are better than money can buy. This needn't be destroyed. Society is strengthened by good ed. Some optional payment maybe.

And "America First" would seem to suggest (1) less outward doing, more domestic doing and (2) when looking outward, focusing on places that are achieving certain things that the USA can learn from. To what extent is Russia such a society?

This beautiful shirt might make excellent modern orchestral garb because it’s open necked (thus helping the many violins and violas in an orchestra) while presenting its wearer as very well dressed in the best sense of the phrase.
