Andrew Lansley's NHS restructure was described as 'so big you could see it from space'. The creation of Great British Railways risks a restructure 'so big you could see it from orbit'. Let's not do that. Instead, let's focus on incentives... and passengers. www.freewheeling.info/blog/gbr-inc...

An important sense-check on migration from @financialtimes.com Ignore the convulsing commentators of the Mail & Telegraph. The UK is about average in the OECD and in line with its peer countries when it comes to the proportion of foreign-born people living in the country.

In two important ways Labour empowered Nigel Farage and Faragism this week. Both were strategic mistakes. We’ve seen this story before. New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Terrific column by @robertshrimsley.bsky.social: www.ft.com/content/3daf...

A very good thread...

Starmer's language was deplorable. It was grotesquely offensive, accusing people who have brought their gifts to this country of doing "incalculable" "damage"; & politically foolish, in endorsing Farage's claims of an establishment conspiracy. But bad analogies with Powell miss the key problem. 🧵

So, for those killed and those whose voices are silenced: what more evidence do you need? Will you act now – decisively – to prevent genocide in Gaza and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law? This Council must prevail. Demand this ends.

A great thread and an excellent piece from @rafaelbehr.bsky.social . Both are well worth reading..

This is spot on..

I hope you’re not waiting for some clever defence of Starmer’s speech. As you know, I try to be fair and have praised him on foreign policy. I don’t think the White Paper is terrible, but ALL of the language surrounding it is inexcusable, insupportable, and indefensible. He can kiss my migrant butt.

"incalculable damage"

What an occasion. What a performance by @hallamfc1860.bsky.social . No shame that they couldn't quite get there... www.tumblr.com/sptxx4/78301...

So proud of these @hallamfc1860.bsky.social players tonight. They went toe to toe with a team from two divisions higher and did not look out of place. And only lost the game 2-1 to a goal scored on 86 mins. A fantastic effort at the end of a brilliant season 👏

At Hillsborough for the County Senior cup final. Come on Hallam!!!

UK governments always look for a sweet spot in immigration policy- tough enough to win votes, not so tough as to hurt the economy - but always find the opposite- clumsy enough to damage business, not enough to impress Reformesque immigration-phobes. so depressing.

The lesson for Labour? Until it can improve local lives and stop fearing Farage, more losses are coming

New post: The mistakes that have led the Conservatives towards annihilation, and Labour copying them mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-... By paroting Farage on asylum/immigration, but failing to change things, the Tory government lost votes to Reform and their more liberal southern heartlands

New post from me about the elections of the last week, where the 'peak populism' hypothesis stands, and what lessons the Labour Party should be drawing. 1/n benansell.substack.com/p/labour-is-...

Labour need to understand their purpose in the eyes of voters. I believe people voted Labour to fix public services. Labour also promised not to raise taxes - but that is not their purpose.

Spot on thread...

Lots of data to be analysed, but we know what yesterday means. Labour has fluffed its 1st year in govt: a promise of vague change followed up with no obvious change & the prospect of limited change between now & 2029. Reform is the party best exploiting the frustrations which follow from this.

Pritzker: And we have a president who claims to love America but hates our military so much that can’t be bothered to delay his golf game to greet the bodies of four fallen U.S. soldiers.

New blog post from me on what AI is and isn't, and why we all have a democratic duty to do some myth busting before the dreaded management sci-fi comes to get us www.careful.industries/blog/2025-4-...

Watch Rachel Cohen. She’s incredibly impressive here. She resigned from law firm Skadden, Arps out of disgust at its “payola” deal with Trump, under which Skadden will hand the Trump administration $100m of free legal work to avoid a possible executive order targeting its work.

YEEEESSSS! Bloody hell the play-offs take a toll on the nerves. But worth it in the end as @hallamfc1860.bsky.social head up... www.tumblr.com/sptxx4/78127...

Nice antidote to the last few weeks watching #swfc. 1,563 of us there as @hallamfc1860.bsky.social moved up a division after a penalty shoot-out. A few Wednesday legends (and @alanbiggs1.bsky.social) in attendance. As close as I’m going to get to witnessing any glory this term but well done to them.

Fantastic to be there Paul. Congratulations to all at @hallamfc1860.bsky.social - thanks for always being so welcoming 👏

What a day for @hallamfc1860.bsky.social ! Promoted via the playoffs after a tight encounter with Beverley Town, which Hallam won on penalties. What a season for the club! It's a massive tribute to the committee, volunteers, staff, coaches, players and fans who make this fabulous club what it is 👏👏👏

The British steel industry. Safe in the hands of McKinsey?

It is April 15th, the 36th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, when nearly a hundred football supporters who went to watch the FA Cup semi-final never came home

If you want a pristine example of how absolutely everything in this country is distorted by the perceived need to perform for right wing voters, look no further than the question of permission to work for asylum seekers

Increasingly hard to see Morecambe staying up after losing to Carlisle. Having killed Worcester Warriors, Jason Whittingham may now have consigned Morecambe to the National League, from which returning will be a huge challenge whoever owns them. Another epic failure of football self-governance.

"Voters expect the Prime Minister to come away with more than just a defence pact when he hosts EU leaders in May and want him to prioritise removing trade barriers in the interests of bringing costs down and getting growth. " @pimlicat.bsky.social on our new polling.
