Tolkien's palantiri, the seeing stones. Sauron turned them to evil, so when you looked into one, all you'd see was always the worst, most crooked visions or interpretations. Each of us has a palantir inside us. Saying "No one likes you, you can't do this..." We miss out on so much by believing it.
