Thank you so much for this. I just saw it on Twitter. This phrase particularly struck a nerve for me: "an additional burden of suffering of those who remain ill by framing persistent symptoms as personal failure." It's so deeply rooted, I'm hardly even aware I'm carrying this belief. (1/2)

I get that! I had to tone down some of the disability difficulties in my own book - especially as it's for kids - as it was getting too damn depressing

This is true for a lot of things (such as a traumatic past as you say) as it's important to have a character arc but I would strongly suggest that a writer doesn't include a disability for a character to 'overcome'

That sounds great. I know several good kidlit books in the UK where the authors share the same lived disability experience as their characters (I have ME too and my books also feature this ☺️)
