Heaven @saskiahogenhout.bsky.social et al. generated chromosome-level genomes for three psyllid species that are plant disease vectors, revealing detoxification gene expansions and genetic substructure across Europe. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evaf116 #genome #entomology

Big moment for Dr* @reubenpjames.bsky.social presenting his final @saskiahogenhout.bsky.social lab meeting @johninnescentre.bsky.social. We're going to miss you buddy.

Happy Daniel Hannon Day to all who celebrate it. I hope you all enjoy the fireworks as we mark perhaps the worst piece of political forecasting going. www.reaction.life/p/britain-lo...

Little known fact: "Death Plinko" was actually the working title for what became "On the Origin Of Species"

#galls Welcome and thank you to all our new followers, please spread the word. Here is this week's gall of the week, specially for any new North American friends, it is caused by the cynipid wasp Diplolepis triforma on the rose Rosa acicularis. Photo from Sudbury Ontario by Peter Shirley.

my hottest educational take is that schools should actively, non-punitively teach students how to admit when they don't know something, aren't sure or have made a mistake, with various teaching frameworks adapted to support this ideal, because people who can't admit fault are breaking the world

in hindsight we probably should have seen this was a trap, but everything was so new and we were still just kids

Happy 18th birthday ggplot2! #rstats

(Longish thread. Apologies) I have met many inspiring colleagues over the past few months, many of whom are in academic institutions targeted by the current administration, and many others who are about to be (the analogy to the ‘eye of Sauron’ has been invoked many times; gallows humor). 1/

I was surprised to just read just that the British Plant Gall Society is on BlueSky but disappointed to read that they’re proposing to stop posting here due to lack of engagement. So if like me you’re interested in galls and just didn’t realise they were here, follow them here: @galling.bsky.social

Truth.

Perhaps we should avoid using military metaphors in our papers... "The FBI said authorities found a scientific article on Liu’s phone that was titled, “Plant-Pathogen Warfare under Changing Climate Conditions.”" www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Are all muppets the same species just with wildly different phenotypes like dogs or are there a lot of different species of muppet

URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🤬🤯 Any lab using @flybase.bsky.social please donate using the link in post below. This incredible community, on whose backs our #Drosophila labs depend, can't be left out to dry.

The findings indicate that, in some areas, “even the coolest growing season in the present day is warmer than the warmest season that would have occurred 50 years ago”. www.carbonbrief.org/global-wheat...

Imagine being against asking for consent to any other industry or person. Any other comparison we immediately understand it's wrong. And yet techbros and their AI grift expect to get an exemption. www.theverge.com/news/674366/...

Let's Streisand effect this up a representative from building management [asked] who was responsible for the Reddit post and demanded that it be deleted. The representative allegedly told Yu that negative press coverage would mean “our goodwill will be gone” www.londoncentric.media/p/high-rise-...

"Researchers recruited to work in the UK have to fund a £1,035 annual immigration health surcharge, which must be paid in full in advance, as well as up to £1,519 in visa fees. For a family of four, the upfront costs can total almost £30,000."

In Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, an AI drink machine purports to analyze your brain and tastebuds and give you the exact drink you want. The protagonist wants tea and tries it again and again, and it keeps making a drink that is “almost, but not entirely, unlike tea.”

I once asked a scientist whom I respect enormously her advice for a successful career and life in science. Her advice: Leave every place better than you found it. It surprises me that many people would try hard to do the compete opposite … and we would elect them to run the country.

Speaking of early 1990s gonzo shows, I just stumbled upon a complete archive of MTV's Liquid Television, the animation show that IMO is the best such thing ever aired. This episode features Aeon Flux, pieces by Mark Beyer, Drew Friedman & Charles Burns, and the debut of Beavis & Butthead.

“the worst and most likely current outcome is … the Treasury continues assuming that large tuition fees from international students will bankroll UK research, while the Home Office simultaneously tries to reduce the number of international students arriving.” N. Imagine if projector salespeople told you projectors were great in the classroom not because they let everybody see an image better but rather because now every course could be about projectors, because projectors are the future and the time to opt out of talking about projectors all day has passed.

Whilst giving a tour today, I happened upon an entomologist @samtmugford.bsky.social in the wilds of @johninnescentre.bsky.social today.

Barbara McClintock proposed – over 40 years ago – that transposable element activity could be a response to stress, and I think that we are still only beginning to understand how right she was.

The anti-trans lot are so sour and obsessive. The antidote to that is thousands of people coming together to be wholly and unashamedly themselves.
