www.quantamagazine.org/how-a-biofil... Great read that challenges simplistic notions of uni- and multi-cellularity in nature. We teach bacteria as being independent cells with a few simple interactions with neighbors. This field of research tells us the story is a lot more complex and fascinating!

The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza in U.S. dairy cattle can be traced to a single spillover event from a wild bird, researchers report in Science, raising concern over growing pandemic risks as the virus evolves and leaps between species. scim.ag/4jIRUrO

After 8 months of peer review, our manuscript was published today @nature.com showing that bovine H5N1 viruses bind poorly to human-type sialic acid receptors. We now know that the virus is only 1 HA substitution away from efficiently binding human receptors. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

In this all-payer, multihospital cohort of patients with community-onset sepsis, the proportion of hospitalizations ending in death or hospice discharge was similar to 30-day mortality and substantially higher than in-hospital mortality alone. #MedSky https://ja.ma/4lp6Dtu

Great all around review for a perennial threat. Also just an amazing organism.

Of >105,000 participants with 30-year follow-up, only 9.3% achieved healthy aging (age 70, w/o any chronic diseases). Their diet was significantly associated with this outcome. @naturemedicine.bsky.social

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.
I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Ive said this before. Unions have a moment in time to create parallel, Non Profit Trust or Associated Health Plans and offer them to small to medium size businesses. Unions can negotiate far better than SMBs or associations . Imagine if millions got their healthcare from unions ? Thoughts ?
