The Nazis were a bunch of goons with a charismatic leader, not exactly a bunch of smart people and great planners. They were at home in violence, so they perpetuated violence. The violence was the plan, everything else was improvised, until the military came to heel, and then there was war.

They'll kill, as much as they deem necessary. Their mode is revolutionary, violently reshaping the political system. They don't need a plan, they just need to destroy their enemies. The belief that there are some kind of metaphysical checks and balances inherent in the people is beyond naive.

It is not that they're competent, it is that they're willing to do things that all those who believe that America's magical self-correcting mechanism kicks in once the right level of outrage is reached, cannot begin to imagine. They're willing to wage a war and destroy everything.
