Lover of books and movies, cats and dogs. Enemy of the heartless and willfully ignorant (meaning MAGA). Notes on my photos: I’m the one in the snazzy white boots. The pond is Walden.

It’s hard because one-third of humanity comprises sociopaths and they gravitate towards power and enjoy cruelty.

And Hitler should’ve opened investigations into the actions of his Brownshirts. We’re rapidly losing the point where law matters, particularly if SCOTUS rules for Trump on birthright citizenship.

MAGA 45.47.: “For the Lord transracialized his One and Only Son into a White American Christian, condemning all others.”

Thank you, ACLU, for the good fight. I don’t know how you’ll be able to win the inevitable appeal to SCOTUS. The Christian zealots there are gonna say: “The 10 Commandments religious? Pshaw! There’s nothing religious about the 10 Commandments. Amen.”
comment in response to post
Fundamentalist religion is the core of some people’s existence. They’ve been indoctrinated since childhood and they think they’re on a mission from God when they try to force us to live under biblical law… whatever the hell that would be, the Bible is inconsistent and contradictory.

Maybe just the 7th Commandment illustrated with a that photo of Trump and Stormy Daniels.

The federal court is right, but the Christian Nationalist zealots on the Supreme Court will likely reverse the decision with their usual specious reasoning: “The 10 Commandments are religious? Pshaw! Nothing at all religious about the 10 Commandmants!”

Great line from the old movie “The Mirror Crack’d” that applies to Tapper: “There are two things I don’t like about you: your face.”

That's the key question, isn't it? And I know what you mean. We obviously have the right of self-defense in the immediate moment when someone is attacking us, but when do we broaden the meaning of immediate? Is it suicidal not to be pro-active?
comment in response to post
Tapper had a choice about what book to write. He chose to write about President Biden, regurgitating what most of us knew (Biden’s staff protected him), while a sociopath hellbent on destroying the country was about to take the reins.

She’s a psychopath. She shot her three-year-old dog because she was too lazy or stupid to either train him or find another home for him. A psychopath. Period.

Love that! Long live the power of protest poetry! (Pardon my p’s.)

This is the famous thought experiment first raised by Socrates. The correct answer is, Door Number 1, please.

A quote that’s been misattributed to a well-known German filmmaker has been going around. Regardless of its origin, its message is valid: Now Americans can see what it was like in Germany when 1/3 of the people wanted to kill 1/3 of their fellow citizens while the remaining 1/3 did nothing.

Question: Can the adjutant general of the California National Guard be relieved of command by Gov. Newsom for carrying out an illegal order, provided last night’s Dist. Court ruling stands? (Newsom appointed him in 2022.)

Exactly. And another scary reference comes from Hannah Arendt’s “Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil.” Under certain circumstances anyone can become an Eichmann. We’re seeing that as MAGA embraces cruelty and violence.

You’re right. Sadly. It’s possible we’ll look back on June 9 in Los Angeles as our Kristallnacht.
comment in response to post
Good point. And while the decent among us on Bluesky aren’t losing track of the case against Rep. McIver, you’re rightly concerned that mainstream media might let the story get lost amidst the next MAGA stunt.

I’ll take 20 seconds to issue one reply: you’re a hothead who’s out of control and therefore it’s a waste of time addressing your half-baked assertions (only “half” — see how generous I am with you) and defensive word salad.
comment in response to post
“Sacrificing everything” is a baseless assertion. And yes you can incrementally change any system, including those with a perceived bias against your goals. The 40-hour work week and 8-hour work day are examples of progress for workers. There are countless other examples.

He’s from Germany. Germans know something about seeking a perfect state, i.e., a thousand-year reich. There are no utopias. Working to improve a flawed capitalist/democratic state is better than just complaining and improving nothing.
comment in response to post
Shane, you’re missing one point. Human beings are deeply flawed. There never will be Utopia. But we can work step by step to create better labor laws, better healthcare, fairer treatment for women and minorities. Progress not perfection.
comment in response to post
Exactly. It’s not about policy. It’s about guns and flash grenades and armored vehicles. June 8 in Los Angeles may very well be out Kristallnacht.
comment in response to post
Does it actually come down to policy anymore? It seems to me that right now it’s coming down to guns, flash grenades, tear gas, and armored vehicles. June 8 in Los Angeles may very well turn out to be our Kristallnacht.

“Let me be clear” was one of President Obama’s favorite rhetorical devices. It doesn’t bother me. Sometimes public speakers need to find an on-ramp into a point that’s important to them.

“Love and Mercy” is a beautiful portrait of a beautiful soul. I’m saddened by the passing of that soul.

You’re not paying attention, are you? But I understand you’re going to be a dog with a bone regarding your original post. Criticism is seen as in affront. I get it. I’m not immune. Nothing further.

If you assume that, then you wouldn’t know history. Poland collapsed before the Soviet Union fell. That collapse, along with Afghanistan and Chernobyl, led to the breakup of the Soviet Union.
comment in response to post
No, herb, you miss the point. I worked for CIA chronicling our clandestine work with Poland’s Solidarity movement. The oppressors didn’t agree with Solidarity’s harsh characterization of the USSR. That wasn’t the goal. The goal was solidarity with supporters. One can’t persuade the unpersuadable.

Yes, that this could be a homophobic hate crime may not get much mainstream coverage. I looked up what the entertainment trade paper Variety reported. They did mention and link to his husband's statement.

Who was the sole Dem engaged in a filibuster? You don't mean Booker, do you? That wasn't a filibuster. And if you opposed Schumer breaking the filibuster to keep the gov't open, well, I don't know how that will ultimately play out. And neither do you. BTW, what legislation has the GOP passed?
comment in response to post
I think Dems are using their only loopholes: delaying confirmations and floor votes. If there were other ones Mitch McConnell would've used them to block the ACA vote in 2010. Right now all we have is political theater, really. Could be wrong, hope there are some others as you suggest.

Oh, he did? I saw him hem and hawing about her before the election, but then I lost track of him. Fair enough.
comment in response to post
My issue with that, and maybe it's splitting hairs, is that it by default frames what some on the left hold as moral convictions to be simple/silly "moral purity" tests while the rigid Old Testament views on the right are righteous "moral convictions."
comment in response to post
The GOP centrist was Bret Stephens of the New York Times. His quote was that Dems "cannot fight every single battle of moral purity against sincere moral convictions of people who are on the other side of the issue." I think GOP centrist is a fair description of him. (And I get your point re purity)
comment in response to post
A GOP centrist recently said Dems need to give up battles of "moral purity" against "sincere moral convictions" of GOPers. It struck me as sophistry. So, an honest question: what ideas of "social purity" are Dems enforcing upon us? And is "social purity" not ultimately based on "moral convictions"?

You have a great Senator. Inspired by him, I just posted the "least of these my brethren" passages from Matthew 25 on a MAGA Facebook page that I monitor. I want to see if any of the (loudly) professed Christians there catch the irony.
