Is literally anyone else actually on there?

I like you can see the lines where they sort of tried. Then just gave up again.

dumb question, but can you completely nuke the laptop and reinstall windows from a fresh windows usb image? Or is this required because you need asus drivers for something to work and they'll get reinstalled that way?

Ironic considering planning is half the fun, as is window shopping, which it also looks to optimise away. It's almost like the goal is to sit between you and monetary choice making, for I'm sure no predatory reason at all. I'm sure they wouldn't, say, inject sponsored activities into your trip

Ben Caplan has a new album out. It's like if Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, a 70s jazz ensemble and drugs went to a party that was playing music by William Shatner.

Worked for 5 years in an org with no dev in the same timezone. We had two standups a day, 12hrs apart, one required full-team meeting a week, and we wrote gdocs for arch / planning, and worked independently. We used to get together once every 6 months or so in person. Worked great. Miss it.

Side note: "Last year's Summer Game Fest brought in more than 34 million global livestreams, which is 26 percent more than the previous year, with a peak concurrent viewer count of 3.8 million. " - gameinformer.com/news/2024/03... How can there be 10x more livestreams than viewers? Lost.

I can't find solid numbers, but it looks like SGF got 2-4 million live viewers last year, so that's ~6-12c per viewer. I have no idea if that is a little or a lot!

Back in the mid 2000s I was anti ad block, because people need to eat, and hey if the ads on your website are really obnoxious I just won't go there. What I didn't count on was _every_ site's ads being obnoxious, a vector for malware, a data hog, and a battery life and performance nightmare.

Can't accidentally breach login data if it's already intentionally and immutably breached on a public ledger *taps forehead*

I couldn't make it through that video. He was never exactly in the shallow end, but dude is now off the Mariana trench of deep ends

I want to believe. I think the reality is that software quality is secondary to the business compared to if they make money, and some absolutely garbage software can make money. I think the reality is going to be much more like www.reddit.com/r/Experience... and www.reddit.com/r/Experience...

This is just to say I have taken the whitespace that was in your linkedin post and which you were probably saving for engagement Forgive me they read so empty and so cold

as someone who can game, but disability means bashing myself against bosses is a no-go, this is fucking amazing news. (yeah there was the summons thing, but it sucked the fun out of it and isn't tunable.)

I'm wondering if it's the dog or tail that's doing the chasing. As in: are tech companies forcing it down our throats to juice numbers so investors will give them money, or validate the money already given.

idk objectively, but with LLMs having non-zero utility the hype _feels_ higher. eg, no one tried to restructure my entire company around crypto, managers didn't flood slack with galaxy brain crypto takes on the regular (devs will soon have 100x productivity with LLMs, how will product keep up!?)

He also seems to think the egg price issue, for chicken eggs, is somehow related to the price of chocolate easter eggs. Because they are both "eggs".

To quote the flagged thread: "Because a lot of HN users secretly agree with this stuff and don't want it discussed." HN is in many ways awesome, but is generally terrible at anything remotely "political", or indeed often ethical.

IME pair programming isn't a replacement for code review though, because the pair gets enough in sync that they end up having the same blind spot problems that a single programmer does. Not that I've seen his actual take here, nor his bathrobe.

I refuse to believe they think they're geniuses. I think they know it's bullshit. It's the crypto grift again. If you just blatantly continually lie that it's great enough people might believe it, and line might go up.

The UK really needs proportional representation. I'm used to MMP (NZ), but I'm sure there are plenty of good options. I'd like someone to vote for, where my vote isn't instantly nullified at the electorate because FPTP means I only ever have two choices, tory and tory lite.

We also use it in software development, and it is also one of my favourite metaphors that I bring up way too much

I'm incredibly nostalgic for these maps, in large part because it was the last time I felt making new content for a game was simple enough to just knock stuff out as a kid in an afternoon. Once Quake and Half Life hit you could still do it but it was much harder, and it only got worse from there

I always like The Spectator because the fadeout paywall feels exactly like walking away from someone unbearable at a party

something has happened in the past 12 months. Protein-based advertising is now 50% of my local supermarket. I don't understand. Near-everyone gets too much protein already. I guess there is some kind of "health" trend happening that I'm blessfully ignorant of.
