It’s that fucking airplane meme and I’m sorry but it’s a massive blind spot among a certain kind of person on the left. You only remember the protests that “won”. It’s common for protestors to eat shit and lose both short and long term.

A reminder to our WGA West friends that if you feel you've been handed anything created by generative AI, been asked to use it, even have a WHIFF of it, the Guild and AI Committee want to hear from you! There's a form! www.wga.org/contracts/kn...

NEW: We investigated several stories of people who spiraled into severe, life-altering mental health crises after developing all-consuming obsessions with ChatGPT. Screenshots we reviewed show the AI directly engaging with and supporting user delusions + conspiracies. futurism.com/chatgpt-ment...

Posting this 1967 Birmingham News editorial cartoon for all the people who don't realize that this is how MLK was viewed by a big chunk of white America.

Pro tip, folks: if you make a figure for a publication, don’t just hand the copyright over to the publisher. Post it on OSF first and then give yourself permission to use it in the first publication and then all future publications. That way, no permissions issues.

One thing that has become super apparent for me is that we need Congress to pass a law creating a default enforcement mechanism that would apply to any statute or regulation that mandates or prohibits specific conduct but doesn’t have an explicit enforcement mechanism

What really pisses me off is the issue of govt ID -- whose whole purpose is to make you MORE not less identifiable -- because sex wasn't even listed on passports until 1977 and on state drivers' licenses until the 1950-60s, and somehow the world didn't end without it.

I would love to see orders of magnitude more discussion about what "swing voters" should figure out, deal with, suck up, get a clue about, etc and orders of magnitude less discussion about how protestors should coddle random third party's hallucinations about this section of the electorate

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

Serious question: Does it jive with CNN policy to have one of their on-air correspondents share a post against free speech and free assembly? It seems relevant since ABC just rebuked/suspended Terry Moran. And, many legacy news outfits have become stricter about political expression by staff.

BREAKING: Miller reportedly engineered the raids that sparked the protests that have engulfed the city in recent days—likely because he wanted a pretext to send in federal troops. https://trib.al/oM1280f

Just days ago, he posted this deranged garbage. But you're giving him a softball interview, @steveinskeep.bsky.social?

this is going around as people finger wag about optics and peaceful protests and i just want to note that the cop here - john pike - received retirement, 8mos of suspended leave pay, and $38k for the pain and suffering of macing kids the students received $6k-30k, most at the lower end

1) You can’t make a bigot money and still call yourself and ally. 2) The fact that WB is cranking out these “this actor is cool! Separate the art from the artist” weekly PR pieces means that Rowling funding the assault on trans rights is hurting their bottom line.

Please follow local, community reporters from Los Angeles, not people who fly into the city and then dip out, never having to deal with the aftermath of their shitty coverage.

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

BREAKING The City of Glendale, California — one of the most populous cities in Southern California — says it has terminated its contract with U.S. Homeland Security and ICE.

beyond the thin veneer of concern behind all of these opeds is the much simpler truth that their authors desperately want to describe something that is very obviously their problem (fewer people want to post in the venues they like more) as though it were our problem

1 in 12 Americans live in California. 1 in 35 Americans live in LA County. LA is America

hey where do conservatives think the piles of rusty needles on every corner in downtown la went for these protests. did the crisis actors move them

Over 100 arrested tonight in SF protesting ICE! Head to 425 7th St, San Francisco, CA 94103 for jail support! Please support Bay Area Anti Repression Committee for bail support!

A shop was like "Our pride flag disappeared & we were afraid it was a hateful person", then they played the security footage & it was a large man emphatically singing Sia's "Chandelier" while swinging on the flag, accidentally breaking it, continuing to sing show-must-go-on style, & stumbling away 💀

A joke, told in two images.

I whole-heartedly believe this, to be clear. When you run around playing at being an insurgent, you are, to use the failed Messiah Ken Keysey's words, "being a part of their movie". You can't beat the fascists if you're a part of their movie, because their movie ends with them winning.

We've had more than a decade of American law enforcement's aggressively, militarized responses to street protests regularly causing violence. This is a well documented, well discussed pattern. There is no excuse for any politician/journalist/civil society figure to not acknowledge that reality.

We’ve been in touch with local law enforcement in LA. They have the resources they need to meet the moment, and we stand ready to assist should the need arise.   There is no emergency and the President’s order calling in the National Guard is unnecessary and counterproductive.

We @lawfaremedia.org will hopefully publish something on this soon but fwiw the legal authority invoked is NOT the Insurrection Act — it’s 10 USC 12406, which is much more limited than an Insurrection Act invocation. (Reporters: Chris Mirasola is the expert to talk to about this)
