After many years of reporting and writing, the day is finally here: THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US is out today. I poured everything into this book, and I hope it ignites outrage at the fact that so many people in the richest nation on earth have been deprived of one of the most basic human necessities.

On this day in 1940, a young Black man named Jesse Thornton was abducted and lynched in Alabama after he addressed a white Alabama police officer without the title "Mr.” No one was ever prosecuted for his death.

"Knowing freedom was possible, but out of reach. Knowledge carried weight — strategic, psychological, emotional." Read an excerpt on Juneteenth and waiting time from @blackquantum.bsky.social's Dismantling the Master's Clock: On Race, Space, and Time: revolutionbythebook.akpress.org/2025/06/june...

"Embraces a concept of disease shown to be incorrect 100 years ago" was just sitting there.

A few thousand for sure today out fighting for democracy in Duluth, Minnesota.

We (rightfully) spend a lot of time highlighting the attacks on higher ed from without. We should spend just as much time on the (shameful) attacks from within, by administrators handing over the institutional keys to the ed-tech industrial complex. The call is coming from inside the house.

A must read: “This is the first time I’ve seen fires in Canada survive two winters and I’ve been watching fires closely since the 1970s,” he told journalist Chris Hatch. “A number of these fires started in 2023, burned through the winter … continued to grow in 2024 and then survived this winter.” 🤯

It took me a while to find it, but the UMN's proposed budget can be found here: z.umn.edu/FY2026Operat...

My actual bedside table with my current reading stack. I can’t recall the last time I’ve had a stronger desire to read three books at the same time. I might just attempt it. #MartinSostre @emilymbender.bsky.social @alexhanna.bsky.social @karenhao.bsky.social #booksky

I don’t want to quote the person asking about why the trains are so dirty though I largely agree with their assessment. But often the cleanliness of Japan is attributed to cultural norms & while that plays a part the answer is that in USA we chose to fund police instead of train custodians.

Look, I know it’s an aggressively Elder Millennial thing*, but I really can’t recommend birding enough. Download Merlin, grab some binoculars, and Google random nature preserves near you that you otherwise wouldn’t even know exist. Trust me: It quickly becomes only partly about the birds.

welcome to the future, now your error-prone software can call the cops (this is an Anthropic employee talking about Claude Opus 4)

I keep getting asked if it’s legal to spend our campaign funds on food drives or our high school public service grants and the answer is YES. It is. Politicians and Democratic organizations need to use their coffers to help people NOW and fill in the gaps that Trump has created.

I’m in NYC for a meeting of @spectrum.ieee.org’s editorial advisory board, which provides the perfect opportunity to highlight Allison Marsh’s recent article urging technical professionals to “defend #humanities research just as loudly as you might defend research in #STEM fields.” #histSTM 🗃️📜⚙️

My enthusiasm for Garrett Felber’s new book can be gauged in part by the fact that I pre-ordered in 2024. I rarely pre-order and never months in advance. Really looking forward to this @akpress.org #MartinSostre

lol if you don’t realize that teaching computers is teaching about systems of power I don’t think you should be a professor at a university

Ok this little free puzzle library is GENIUS and I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before!!!

Hello from #Duluth

Protest in #Duluth!

In honor of the UK cover reveal of EMPIRE OF AI, I have a confession: When thinking about how to structure my book, I drew heavy inspiration from the Netflix series The Crown. 1/ (Out May 20, pre-order here: empireofai.com.)

I understand we're in a time of budget challenges, but for one of the first cuts to be that of a program that focuses on a very marginalized community seems particularly tragic. #DeafStudies #UMN #Duluth www.wdio.com/front-page/t...

I took ASL provided by Deaf Studies at UMD to fulfill a second language requirement I didn’t complete in HS. I don’t use this in my day-to-day life, but it was more than a language fulfillment. It helped me to better understand a culture I wouldn’t have otherwise learned about. chng.it/YDcWtdHg5X

The closest historical comparison is not Hitler, it's Mao. Destroying the national economy through ideologically driven policy that he alone believes will make the country great through manufacturing, with crowds of his cult followers cheering...we're living through our very own Cultural Revolution

"Eliminating federal funding for the #humanities saves next to no money, but it will cost the American people something precious: one of the few federal institutions whose whole purpose is to foster community & thoughtful discussion across the polarities that increasingly divide & depress us." #NEH

Let's talk about this idea of "innovation" in schools. What does it mean? How does it play out? Who decides what's innovative? @jbpleasa.bsky.social talks with @philnichols.bsky.social about "Building the Innovation School" - our next book club book! www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/buildin...

Great Hands Off Protest today in Duluth. MN AG Keith Ellison gave a great speech, ending with an appeal for solidarity. They said 2500 but seemed much bigger to me.

Huge crowd of protesters in Duluth, Minnesota for the Hands Off! protest! Thank you, Minnesota!

Absolutely incredible turn out at MN State Capitol! #HandsOff

We are a “public” system that already gets less than 10% of its funding from the state, and these people want to cut it more. They don’t care about the children of New Hampshire, who deserve a high quality, affordable, and local university system option. www.seacoastonline.com/story/news/l...

Heads up, #humanities friends! The situation @nehgov.bsky.social is even more dire than we expected… @nytimes.com reports DOGE is recommending 70-80% staff cuts & the cancellation of grants made during the Biden administration that haven’t been fully paid out. #OhTheHumanities #NEH #GiftLink 🎁

"I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America, because that speaks to our greatness" -- 20 hours into his speech, Cory Booker is spitting absolute 🔥

I’ve taken the Senate floor and will speak for as long as I’m physically able to lift the voices of Americans who are being harmed and not being heard in this moment of crisis. Watch here:
