Feels like we're kindred souls in how we don't particularly like or enjoy paywalling stuff off and would rather have peeps support us to be able to give freely of ourselves for everyone to enjoy.

I haven't gotten this running properly yet in my Mac setup (it won't display the Japanese characters correctly), so these are screenshots from Mobygames of the kind of game Silka no Tō is. Pretty cute stuff, and the monochrome graphics lend it a definite aesthetic.

Oh! With those, I've had far more success. I was very wary about picking up tapes, thinking they would all have decayed or something. But all the tapes that came with the C64 I picked up last summer have worked, and so have all but one of the ones I've picked up since.

Ooh, I will keep an eye out for them. Sound right up my alley!

Ah, that's poor luck! And yeah, it's a bit of a crapshoot these days if 3.5" floppies work.

xD It does! I was fascinated by this ad and screenies of the game in the mags I read at the time. There's a bit about the game itself here:

Aha, yep! It's such a cool and satisfyingly chunky design.

xD I didn't! Aha, thank you for the heads-up on this. Been a long 'ol time since heard this song.

Yeah, absolutely <3 One of those that needs the blending nuance of a CRT TV or a good shader to really shine.

Ah yeah, very much has that S.T.U.N Runner look and feel, especially in the tunnel sections. The DOS version that the GOG release uses with DOSBOX is fine, but you lose out on some of the visual fidelity and sound/music of the Amiga/ST versions.

Aha, you're welcome! It resides in my memory from the time purely thanks to Zzap64 ads and screenies for it. Having a C64 at the time, the Amiga shots looked amazing and indeed something from he future.

Yeah, totally agree!

What info I can find on its development states that the devs had to license certain concepts from Neuromancer, whether from Gibson or his publisher, such as its depiction of cyberspace and a powerful corporation. I wonder what other cyberpunk concepts are trademarked like that?

It's all done against the clock, with Kaf-e in risk of being caught by drones and security guards if you don't respond to situations. it's a little bit clunky to control and initially confusing (there's a tutorial in the manual), but once you sus it, it becomes a tense, gripping experience.

Chad will 'fly' through cyberspace, taking down ICE and 'destroying' the required access notes, tractoring keys into locks, and doing other tasks, all while monitoring the map. It's a gorgeous-looking game for the time, steeped in the Neuromancer-style abstract visions of cyberspace.

The protag, Chad, and his girlfriend, Kaf-E, discover that subliminal pro-consumerism messages are being relayed into the 'Dreams', and set about bringing the whole system crashing down. Kaf-E will infiltrate the offices of the corpo while Chad effectively plays the part of a decker.

Aha, yeah, very much so!

Hear, hear! Still holds up so well. <3 A little bit of trivia: SOTN was how I first heard any of the classic Famicom/NES CV music. The PAL and JPN versions had a music disc with it, Dracula Music Collection. How amazing the NES music was sent me seeking Nesticle to play them.

Yeah, I remember playing the first Fear Effect back in the day but not the second one. it's been one of the joys of building up a dream PS1 collection these past six years. I've gotten to pick up and play so much of what I missed out on then as I started being drawn more to PC gaming in 2000-2001.

Yeah! It's always interesting to see that contrast.
