A favourite of mine is another from Bath, Roll and Curl by @lunchontuesday.bsky.co.uk. This one changed what I thought flash could do and how it could do it at an early stage in my own writing. I often think of it, for writing and life. www.bathflashfictionaward.com/2016/02/ingr...

Thanks so much for this, Finnian - such a lovely and unexpected boost! I also love Barbara’s Mrs Jackson, a deeply moving, layered piece that I always have to sit with for a while after reading.

That is a glorious cake, Matt!

Fondly remembering the WH Smith Win A Pony competition - which, of course, I never won. Sometimes wonder how those ponies got on …

What a great request, joyful flash! And yes, trickier to find - storytelling does generally seem to want to plumb the dark rather than the light, right? I find this one by @aniking.bsky.social joyful - the joy of embracing fiery passion! trampset.org/fellas-is-it...

That is, indeed, a wonderful piece of joyful rumbling! Great to read first thing. Especially love the ‘mechanics’ of it. Thanks for sharing, Philippa, and for writing @aniking.bsky.social. Cc @mattkendrick.bsky.social #JoyfulFlash

Anthology is a great idea, should you feel able. Of course, it won’t be much work as we’re clearly none of us capable of writing it :)

Listened this morning, Sarah. It did make me smile, so evocative and electric. I especially liked the balloons. A good way to start the day. It’s a shame about Ellipsis - they had a good range of stories.

Aw, made me smile too - lovely bit of quantum dogginess

I remember this vividly from first time round. Thanks for reprinting

I've always loved the way this one interweaves imagined joy against the sadness of reality (not quite full on joy but it still leaves me feeling uplifted): www.bathflashfictionaward.com/2021/10/chlo...

Same! But my mind always goes blank when anyone says, what’s your favourite …? Still, feels like there’s definitely scope for a comp (should you feel like it)

Oh yes, that’s a beauty. It came up the round I was judging and sang out from the longlist.

Here's one of mine to start. #JoyfulFlashFiction www.bathflashfictionaward.com/2019/02/shar... (Apologies for my enormous face and for choosing my own story - bit short of time!)

Think there’s truth in that. Feels like there’s a sharing tag coming up … but later - it’s the first day of spring and the sun is shining so I’m washing me nets :)

Haha! Your prompt for today is to fit all those in! Excellent idea to write happy stories. I do try, but my compass seems fixed toward Melancholy. (My story 'Her Safe Word is Circus' was a deliberate attempt to write something full of joy not gloom, but still some creepy clowns sidled in.)

Your posts are always so insightful and compassionate and so perfectly …human, Matt. I’m sorry it’s not possible for your day to go as planned, but your birthday is a day to celebrate you and I - and many others - do! All best wishes on your birthday 🎈 x

Love this, Carrie. The Maypole was once my local: you've captured that mix of crowd & green (amid and apart) of that place, Your pace of reading + birdsong helped slow me down on a busy morning ready for that lovely fusion of final words/image (the slow thrive/final smile). So glad I caught this.

I agree, James. That sudden shift in tone and perspective halfway through, then everything drawn back together in that last unforgettable image. Brilliant control while maintaining emotional impact in such a tiny space, Martha! congratulations 👏🏻🎉👏🏻

Ferryboat. I've seen your pics before & thought it looked familiar but hadn't been for years, so wasn't sure until we were there. It was quite flooded (mid-Dec) but very beautiful and Herewardy. Not down that offen, but yes will get in touch! And maybe see you somewhere else before then x

I think we must have walked right past your house in December, Jan. We were staying at the nearby pub for Xmas lunch with Ely in-laws. Such an atmospheric spot.
