If you want to improve your screenwriting, the way you do it is by watching films and writing down what's happening. And I don't mean jot down a note every couple of minutes. I mean write down EV -- ERY -- THING. Make connections. Analyse it. Watch it again. And unpick everything you see and hear.

I love that scene in Heat when Al Pacino finds Natalie Portman in the bathtub after her suicide attempt. It would have been so easy to have written him crying or freaking out, but instead he just says "what a fucking waste". I think that's such a brilliant line, it tells you so much about him.

That fixed me. That watered my crops. Fed my children for seven generation. That was one of those movies where I just sat through the credits and had a good cry. Weirdly lovely film, great characters.
