Millions of children at risk as vaccine uptake around the world stalls www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

A new national inquiry into maternity has been announced by @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social - important families get answers - but unless we scrutinise the policy drivers from NHSE and DHSC since at least 2000 we will miss a key part of the picture. Questions over ideology, education, etc go higher:

Today is #GlobalMNDAwarenessDay. For 6 months my amazing mum has been living with this awful disease. It's an incredibly tough time but she continues to smile & laugh @mndassoc.bsky.social has been a great support. You can donate so ppl like mum get help here www.mndassociation.org/get-involved...

Assisted dying has passed the Commons with 314 votes to 291. Now on to Lords but almost certain to become law. I wrote this back in Dec on how assisted dying might work - some details have changed but the crux remains the same in terms of potential delivery routes: www.thetimes.com/uk/healthcar...

Beautiful evening in Amsterdam after a hard days graft

I wonder if Hlth Europe conference will let me take this back to Sunday Times office? Sure my colleagues would love it.

I'm in Amsterdam for HLTH Europe conference...but where should I go for a nice walk, meal, drink? Asking here as ppl in the other place might send me somewhere I don't wanna go.

"Whooping cough in newborn babies, it’s awful,” she said. “They get this massive white cell count, their lungs get clogged. They get clogging of the blood vessels in their brain and their hearts give up. You stand at the end of the bed in intensive care and can do very little about it.”

Amid the gleaming exhibition stands and branded tote bags, managers at the annual NHS Confederation conference in Manchester last week spoke openly of their fear that the public was losing patience with the NHS. READ: www.thetimes.com/article/11bb...

Reminder...the NHS capital backlog is worth £13.8bn

Extracts from the spending review for NHS...a 50% increase in spending on technology, capital up 20% in real terms from 2023 but flat from 2025 (big problem for new hospitals etc), £4bn for social care while Govt dodges any meaningful reform for years...

The Government is increasing real-terms day to day spending in the NHS by 3% per year for every year of the review period, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced, providing an extra “£29 billion per year” for the health service.

This is key. If there’s no extra capital & no changes to the rules that prevent private investment being used to boost capital funding, the NHS won’t be the ‘big winner’ from the CSR that some are claiming. But it’s hard to be churlish about the 2.8% for revenue given the wider public finances.

Big message from Mackey, Penny Dash and Govt to NHS leaders is they are backing off regulation & control - trust people more. Given lack of robust regulation of managers, very little in way of standards/training, are we confident calibre of management is up to it? #nhsconfedexpo

So if Jim is right - the GDP of Portugal is around £243bn so that would I think fit with what we expect from #spendingreview of roughly £30bn extra 🤔#nhsconfedexpo

NHS Chief Jim Mackey says Govt has "done us a good turn" in NHS spending review saying: "We are always going to be in a world where we want more money but we have got what the country can afford to give us...it is the equivalent of the GDP of Portugal." #NHSconfedexpo

Ahead of the #spendingreview today watch out for news on the NHS capital budget...if it is held flat in real-terms as expected it poses big challenges, not least for the New Hospital Programme. Unless Govt is to try and do PFI 2.0 #nhsconfedexpo From The Sunday Times:

Penny Dash tells #nhsconfedexpo that the NHS sees 130 million outpatients appointments a year - the majority of people on the waiting list are waiting for an outpatient - "Surely we can sort out outpatients"

"We've had a big focus on safety in the last 10 years," says Penny Dash at #nhsconfedexpo "but it came at the expense of patient experience and effectiveness. We need to regroup."

Who’d have thought that the 2020s would bring back diseases which were nearly extinct, rearmament and military parades for fascist leaders. Or that it will be difficult to know what’s real and what isn’t.

11 children died from whopping cough last year and there were more measles cases than any year back to 2012.

My goodness this CQC report in to health and social care support for people with dementia is grim. The landing page offers a download of an 'easy read' version. I can assure you I did not find the full report an easy read. We must do better.

Dementia patients are being left alone, distressed and wandering in under-staffed care homes, the @CareQualityComm has warned. In The Sunday Times print edition. The CQC report is here: www.cqc.org.uk/publications...
