Record high sea surface temperatures around Ireland and the UK currently. Hopefully the event is short-lived and does not have major impacts for #biodiversity, #fisheries and aquaculture. #ClimateCrisis 🌊🧪⚒️🌡️

In case you were wondering why we're doing glaciology fieldwork in NW Greenland this year, here is (part of) the answer... It's all to do with an early break up of sea ice. ❄️🧪🥼⚒️⛏️

Earth may already be too hot for the survival of polar ice sheets, study says www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Some unfortunate people only have grass on their lawns.

The #Arctic is getting wetter during the month of May across many regions of the Arctic Ocean. The largest trends are closer to areas of greater sea-ice loss toward the Atlantic Ocean. + Data: psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded... + Info: doi.org/10.25923/xf7...

Studies everywhere have shown that pedestrianizing business districts doesn't mean the death of businesses - in fact, it's the exact opposite

Climate researcher @zacklabe.com was one of hundreds of scientists laid off at the NOAA by DOGE this year. He believes we're at a tipping point and that "there could be a complete gap in the next generation of scientists." www.highnorthnews.com/en/us-climat...

In 2024, Europe saw average to slightly above-average fire danger for most of the year, with the highest values in September. Around 110,000 hectares burnt in Portugal that month, accounting for around a quarter of the overall total burnt area in Europe for the year. bit.ly/4ctJySA #ESOTC2024 #C3S

In today’s climate, #atmosphericrivers play a major role in bringing snowfall to #Antarctica. Have you ever wondered how that might change in the future? Out today, our new study on the future frequency and precipitation impacts of Antarctic atmospheric rivers: www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Cars, roads, and buildings don't belong on beaches! Speaking as someone who grew up on—and absolutely loves—the wild and beautiful west coast of Denmark.

Waves charge into Baja California as vortices swirl. Beautiful atmospheric chaos.

🚀 Excited to announce the kick-off of SAGE (Sea Ice Age and Drift) – a new @esa.int project led by @met.no! We’ll map sea ice age and drift globally using satellites 🛰️, AI 🤖, and advanced tracking👣 – building the first global climate dataset of its kind. ❄️ (in Norwegian) 👉https://shorturl.at/kmXSc

It's Europe Day! Today we honour #C3S and #CopernicusAtmosphere for their pivotal contributions of data and tools to help better understand climatic and atmospheric conditions in Europe. #EuropeDay

🎉 We’re celebrating our 50th birthday on 30 May! For half a century, we’ve been serving Europe, inspiring its citizens and exploring the cosmos. Check out our #50YearsOfESA web site for stories, archive images and details of events coming up in the year. 🔗 esa.int/About_Us/50_...

In the 1980s, the US experienced one billion-plus dollar extreme weather disaster on average every 4 months. Today? There’s one every 2 weeks, and 9 in 10 Americans say they’ve felt the impacts. Clearly, this is the record to cut—if you don’t want to show how climate change is hitting home.

People sometimes think of Antarctica as being barren and devoid of life, but the ocean surrounding the continent is incredibly rich with wildlife and biodiversity. Photos of new discoveries and insights from our wonderful Australian colleagues… 🧪🥼❄️🌊🦑 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

❄️April 2025 Climate Bulletin: Arctic sea ice extent was 3% below average, following four months with record low monthly values for the time of year. Antarctic sea ice extent was 10% below average. Get the details 👉 climate.copernicus.eu/sea-ice-cove... #C3S

Our #seaice team has developed a Sea Ice Index, online since several years, at osisaf-hl.met.no/v2p2-sea-ice.... It offers visuals of the trends and evolution of sea ice at hemispheric, global and regional scales. It includes the sea-ice extent and area since 1978, and is continuously updated.

🌡 The April 2025 Climate Bulletin is out. It was the second-warmest April globally, with an average ERA5 surface air temperature of 14.96°C, 0.60°C above the 1991-2020 average for April and 1.51°C above the pre-industrial level for the month. Read the details climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-...

Nice to have the Utqiaġvik sea ice cam back online. Wednesday mostly sunny at 7pm, 25F and northeast wind 15 mph. Open water visible at the edge of the fast ice on the left side of the image. #akwx #Spring2025

Happy 99th birthday to the man who gave voice to the wild. 🎉 Sir David Attenborough, thank you for a lifetime dedicated to the natural world, and for sharing its story with wisdom, wonder, and grace. You've inspired generations to fall in love with nature.

Sea ice data on @polarportal.bsky.social is from European @osi-saf.eumetsat.int group, sea ice thickness + Greenland surface mass balance is from @dmidk.bsky.social's operational models + #GRACE satellite data is from our partners @dtucryo.bsky.social as part of @esaclimate.bsky.social ❄️🥼⚒️🧪⛏️🌊

That's terrible news to read. For us documenting #SeaIce, having colleagues that share comparable data obtained by different algorithms is a form of quality assessment of our own data. It is a terrible loss for us as it is for our whole user community. @eumetsat.int @nsidc.bsky.social

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

It is really cool to see a sea-ice concentration dataset from pre-1978! Wonder what secrets or new features will it present to us 🤓 Well done 👏

This is insane. When will this madness stop.

📣 Don't miss ESA's Living Planet Symposium in Vienna, 23-27 June! One of the largest Earth Observation conferences in the world, the LPS is a unique opportunity for professionals and students to network. 🗣️ Register here until 26 May: lps25.esa.int @esa.int #LPS25

Remember: NOAA is not its social media accounts. Do not let the takeover of NOAA communications take away your support of the real NOAA and the very real scientists behind it. The administration would want nothing more than for us to stop supporting our science agencies 🧪

Introducing the "tree ring plot": a new way to visualize global surface temperatures. Each ring is a year, and each colored cell represents a day in global average temperatures (compared to a 1850-1900 preindustrial baseline).

Mye tyder på at naturens tålmodige buffer-kapasitet mot vår klima-uforstand er i ferd med å bli brukt opp. Det er dramatisk www.nrk.no/klima/krafti...

It's wild that all my colleagues who are funded by a deep sea mining company to research the topic ultimately conclude that we shouldn't mine the deep sea. We should stop seeing the ocean as a place to exploit instead of a place of wonder and beauty and an essential part of our life support system.

New book!! 📕 Antarctica is intimately connected to the rest of our planet, affecting climate, ecosystems, cultures and society. Our new book draws together international experts to explore this influence, and to understand what humans are doing to Antarctica (1/n) www.routledge.com/Antarctica-a...

It's still Easter and it's still okay.

Why did Finland's forests change from a carbon sink to a permanent source of emissions in a few years? The reason is simple: emissions from the soil increased exponentially. But what caused this explosion? There are at least three reasons for this, which I will explain in the thread below. 1/9

Africa experiences more than half of the burned wildfire area globally. In some years, it’s as much as two-thirds of the total. Whether it’s a “high” or “low” year for wildfires globally largely reflects whether it’s a high or low year for Africa. ourworldindata.org/data-insight...

🚨🚨 Four of NOAA's six Regional Climate Centers have shut down due to a suspension in funding. The remaining two are warning their funding could end in June. This appears the first major user-facing NOAA service that has shut down under Trump. fox5sandiego.com/weather/half...

87 years ago. In April 1938, Guy Callendar published the first evidence from thermometer observations that the world’s land areas were warming. He also linked the observed warming to the increase in atmospheric CO₂ from burning coal. 87 years ago. rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

For #ESOTC2024 we took a detailed look at heat & drought in southeastern Europe last summer: 6 heatwaves, the region’s longest heatwave on record at 13 days, record numbers of heat stress days and tropical nights, few days between heatwaves 🥵🔥 Find out more: climate.copernicus.eu/esotc/2024/h...

🌊 The N.Atlantic has been experiencing extreme T°C in 2023. This situation raises a number of questions: Have we missed something? Do climate models allow us to understand such an event, or have we entered a new climate regime? We attempted to answer these questions in this study: rdcu.be/eh0e8 1/14
