With games there tend only a few major characters and they *have* to respect the pre-existing character buildup and development or at least understand the themes, and I don't see how they can do that if they drop the game. It's an interactive medium for a reason

I agree in principle that they could make it work, looking up Outlander at least it's based on a pre-existing work, TNG / Voyager made it work despite being continuations. But to compare, if they never watched ToS before making TNG while keeping Spock and Kirk, the results would have been disastrous
