As a high school then college math instructor, I hate the phrase improper fraction because it is the preferred answer every time, but the word improper gives it a negative connotation. The only time a mixed number is helpful is as a final answer to a word problem, and decimals are much more common.

Favorite moment today was a hard-working student repeating my class who finally understood factoring today, and said, with a laugh, "Why didn't you say it like that last semester?" Of course I did, but now they are on level and ready to learn it all! 🎉
