I saw others fall into this despair and vowed to avoid it myself. Now a badge goes in the trash as soon as I get home.
It stings, but chucking a ball of lanyards and badges feels weirdly heavy and difficult to do! So much living happened under those plastic rectangles.

There have been weird gaming love-ins before... I've learned there's not much to be gained trying to mellow folks' enthusiasm.
It does take a fair amount of citing real data to put things in perspective though - like you said, properly calibrating what "mainstream" really means.
