A terrifying escalation:

Really important story - army officials asked soldiers to identify themselves if they don't agree with Trump's politics that way he'd get only supportive soldiers in uniform during his political rally on base. Heavier soldiers were also barred from participating.

This absolutely unhinged exchange is a lawyer for the Texas AG's office arguing that it's totally fine for there to be bugs crawling around in prison food. Amazing stuff.

“Your Honor, I have eaten bugs before”

I saw a "why should Black people care about ICE?" post on IG and I'm just floored just how much Black immigrants are rendered invisible while facing higher detention and deportation rates.

đź‘€ We've got the ~distributions~ on Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill." Upshot: It takes a lot of money from the lowest 10% of earners and gives a bunch to the top 10%. Expressed in 2 ways here: - Dollar amounts - % of household resources (more in thread) www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Trump just admitted that his mass deportations are bad for farmers and the economy, and crucially, also admitted that workers who are getting deported are "almost impossible to replace." That's a massive repudiation of MAGA ideology:

wow I wonder if the cops who lied about the sitting senator even though everything they did was on tape are also being less than honest about the presence of violent agitators at the protests in los angeles. they might even not have told the entire truth about other protests

Folks, CBO estimate of the distributional effect of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is out: www.cbo.gov/system/files... It's grotesque

yep! unpaywalled:

This fanatic is openly talking about fabricating a reason to suspend everyone's constitutional right to due process — and Trump has given him free rein. Is there NO Republican in D.C. who will stand up to these constitutional arsonists?

Whoops! Another reminder that Musk's chainsaw massacre of federal agencies has nothing to do with efficiency and everything to do with gutting services that benefit all to rig the government for the few. Remember: Project 2025 calls for selling off the NWS to the highest bidder…

If you sat down a random panel of Americans and told them what Republicans are currently doing, my guess is that the vast majority simply wouldn't believe you. It comes off like you're describing a Bond villain. The reality sounds wildly different & more extreme than what they hear organically.

Nothing to see here. Just @emilyjaynef.bsky.social being forcibly removed from NY-17 Rep. Mike Lawler's town hall tonight for having the temerity to act like a citizen of the United States. Hero.

the president wants to reopen alcatraz because he’s an old man with dementia who is mentally frozen in the 1970s and 80s. he’s not trying to distract you, his brain is just full of holes

Grandpa got confused by what he saw on TV again, perhaps

Instead of waking up every morning and thinking about how it's all going down the tubes, I keep reminding myself: There are many, many people who are keeping their heads down, doing what they can, quietly discharging their responsibilities and avoiding attention. I know some of them. Focus on that.

Was just discussing this with a federal employee. If you can do this successfully for a year and eight months, your department/organization/whatever may well survive

We know Pope Francis disdained JD Vance for justifying MAGA’s contempt for immigrants and the global poor in the language of Catholic teaching. But in his final days, I suspect there was another element. www.offmessage.net/p/francis-va...

Today Trump ordered DOJ to investigate ActBlue, which is payment processing platform for basically every progressive organization in the US. Trump is ordering DOJ to disrupt the opposition party Yesterday Trump personally got $10s of millions in cash from untraceable foreigners in new crypto scheme

If anyone out there was undecided on whether Trump is operationalizing a precise, coordinated plan to destroy our democracy so he can rule until he dies, the move to shut down Act Blue, the primary way Democrats’ campaigns are funded, should be the final proof point.

“He is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin. When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him. There is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.” Sen. Jon Ossoff

Two former Wells Fargo executives were fined $8.5M by the Biden administration for covering up the bank's infamous fake account scandal. Trump just slashed those fines to a paltry $150,000 after Wells Fargo gave $1M to his inauguration. See how this works?

RFK Jr. is ending the federal Narcan distribution program credited with the recent steep decline in overdose deaths. This despite his own past heroin addiction and his own brother dying of a drug overdose in 1984.

I keep coming back to this pithy 1854 statement by Abraham Lincoln about “the legitimate object of government,” which the Trump administration is undermining by offloading to individuals tasks, including life or death matters, that are more effectively, efficiently and fairly done collectively.

Love this. In his “I Agree” installation Dima Yarovinsky-Yahel took the content from terms of service statements for companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Tinder and printed them out on A4 paper with a standard font size for legal contracts to demonstrate the length of these agreements.

📣 For those participating in the next round of #HandsOff #NoKings #MayDay protests, a reminder that I've created HIGH-RES PDF versions of my healthcare enrollment pie charts for all 435 House Districts and all 50 states +DC, perfect for printing to 24"x36" poster board! acasignups.net/piecharts

Know where most of the bags for saline come from? China. Know where most of the gauze, gowns, tubing, needles, syringes, and catheters come from? China. Know where nitrile gloves come from? China.

Previous to the FDA, folks would put chalk and plaster of Paris in milk to make it appear white. They could also add formaldehyde to cover the smell and taste of spoiled milk.

Yet another example of the gutting of key parts of HHS.

Everyone paying attention here, folks? Safety inspections of milk doesn't sounds like waste or fat to me. WTF?

amazing how grasping this seems in response to someone doing something, how much he needs to be able to rewrite what you saw. the lesson is to do more things

The "quiet part" here is that far too many journalists don't think a protest is newsworthy -- even when as many as 5 million people come out! -- unless there's violence. Millions of Americans following MLK's hallowed example of nonviolent protest doesn't cut it with them

So… this was supposed to be about Paul Revere’s ride, but the Senator just unloaded about the Trump administration and its Republican enablers. Far more newsworthy than I expected. (You can probably see me shifting to “crap, this was not the interview I prepped!” but the result was memorable.)

Yall we want to win. We went to win back places like Georgia to penalize the MAGA regime for their fascist power grab. To do that we need to know why folks switched teams, sure, but we also need to know why they stayed home. Everyone needs persuasion in this attention based economy!

“[W]e’re also seeing…the favoring not of Christians per se, but of a CERTAiN KIND of Christianity. Trump & his people are aiming not to just work w/ the movement, but to shape the movement itself, to make it more faux-populist, demagogic & frankly authoritarian.” - @katherinestewart.bsky.social 1/

Didn’t get a chance to post this earlier, but there was a huge turnout in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia at the federal courthouse. From my seat in the jury room, I heard the supporters outside chanting throughout the hearing.

PAYING THE GOVERNMENT OF EL SALVADOR TO KEEP HIM AT CECOT

And Democrats like Senator Van Hollen from MD are flying there to try to get wrongfully detained people like Kilmar Abrego Garcia released from that horrible prison.

We've seen videos like this before, but usually when you see a tearful wife pleading with the kidnappers who have taken her husband, she's not talking to the U.S. president

Abrego Garcia's wife: "I will not stop fighting until I see my husband alive. Kilmar, if you can hear me, stay strong. God hasn't forgotten about you. Our children are asking when you will come home ... they miss their dad so much."

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you. The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

Even if you (wrongly) believe that some immigrants lack due process rights, what’s to stop the government from claiming that *you* are an undocumented immigrant; removing you to El Salvador; citing an “administrative error”; and refusing to do anything to bring you back? The answer is due process.

One result of cuts to funding "“The macaques. It’s such a heavy responsibility to work with them & to just be asked to kill them halfway thru the study...” “Anybody who has animal studies ... is looking at killing the animals” if funding is cut, Fortune said." www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/15/m...

Criminals deserve due process because due process is literally how we determine whether someone is, *in fact*, a criminal

One important fact this grotesque farce has shined some needed light on is that immigration judges are entirely too happy to rubber-stamp ICE determinations that someone is a gang member based on essentially no evidence.
