I'm convinced we have far too many lawyers and too few engineers / scientists / statisticians in politics. These people don't seem to viscerally understand data at all.

Cannot agree more. I'm 56 and, by genetic lottery, ended up with grade 4 arthritis in both hips. Just had the first of two total hip replacements. Take every opportunity to protect yourself from falls, and from anything that might result in permanent joint damage.

Update: I'm 3 weeks post-op for the first of two total hip replacements. Healing amazingly quickly and walking with *no* joint pain, without a cane or other assistance. This is everything I'd hoped it would be. I go in for the other hip in 5 weeks. By next year, I hope to be fully bionic.

We called it gleeking too and as I kid I could do it. Try as I may, I can’t do it now though

This very much reminds me of Peter Norvig's thing about test driven development. You can't write tests for something you don't understand, i.e. don't have a complete theory for. All the tests in the world won't get you there. Relying on LLMs for the theory fails in the same fashion.

Oh, on that we agree. It's totally a proxy war. I just think it should have been much more than 1/2 a billion to remove any doubt about both our resolve and the outcome.

"Peace for our time"? If anything, the Biden administration slowed Ukrainian progression by stalling aid for fear of Russian escalation. www.reuters.com/investigatio... and this is ambiguous at best www.politico.com/news/2024/04...

Runs in the family. Have you noticed how many driver dynasties there are? Makes you wonder about nature vs nurture.

Two fried eggs with Tillamook Cheddar cheese, English muffin, black coffee. Pretty good day.

My mother tried to gaslight me, probably to save money. As a child, I grew up on margarine, and discovering "real butter" was a religious experience. See also Miracle Whip and Kraft American singles cheese.

I was part of the small group that tried to name EC2 "Amazon Execution Service". Don't let me name anything. Although, looking back, didn't you and I name Omnibus? That wasn't so bad.

I enjoyed my linux desktop experience, but now I have too many apps that simply aren't supported. I've flipped to Mac for productivity, but a really short network connection to a powerful linux server for everything else. It's a constant tug of war between apps & dev stuff.

I hear ya. I really tried going "all WSL" at one point and then just kept running into rough edges. I *love* all the additional support the big players are putting in, but it's still *not really* Linux and sometimes that matters.

I agree. I mean why do you need those six extra degrees? A nice zero would be fine! 😆

Purchased! Was looking for New Year's recommendations. I know folks like to bash on Amazon, but I also liked being able to add the audio book for an extra couple bucks. I tend to go back and forth between book & audio when commuting.

Somebody just watched Top Gun: Maverick :). I agree. They are both excellent. I can't bring myself to watch the Glen Powell / Sydney Sweeney rom-com though.

I too had a TI 99/4A and *loved* it. I then moved to an Apple ][+. *But* the first real computer I got to work on as a teenager was a DEC2060 running TOPS-20. I was a lucky kid.

And since cost tracks demand in many things, I'm gonna assume the low cost of living *is because nobody wants to move there*. Am I close?

I still have a small number of painted baked dough ornaments I made in Kindergarten or 1st grade. My family teases me about how protective I am of them.

Gorgeous Bengals, I presume? Are they quite vocal? Mine certainly was. Oh, and the ability to leap 6+ feet straight up? Amazing athletes.
