I haven't jumped in but what I've seen on streams seems good enough from a $ to number of hours you'll get ratio.
I'm of the same opinion with early access except a couple games that did it well, especially when its something that will be ftp down the line.

I start on the highest difficulty available because I always feel in rpgs I outscale the lower ones halfway through. Just more enjoyable that way for me, if it feels genuinely unfair I knock the difficulty down a peg. I enjoyed mass effect and dragon age on insanity/nightmare
