Ro was supposed to be Kira's role for DS9, but Michelle Forbes said no. Im kinda glad she did because i cant imagine the show without Kira/Nana Visitor

if DS9 is the focus, you definitely need the two big Ro episodes, Ensign Ro and Preemptive Strike. They introduce the Bajorans and the Maquis, basically setting up DS9.
