There's too much of this "you have to accept that some people have bigoted, beliefs, and you have to give those bigoted beliefs the same respect as the people being harmed by those bigoted beliefs" And not enough of this "We should have more justice in society"

So this happened yesterday. The film @ourhugetinyproblem will be coming out sometime in mid 2026. #microplastics #plasticchemicals @pnwmicroplastics.bsky.social

We live under an escalating police state working to take food, medical care, & civil rights away from poor communities. Talking abt "violence" without beginning there is stupid & shows a basic misunderstanding of the word itself.

She was right. #USDemocracy

Those concerned about violence might want to start with violence against immigrants, by ICE here, by illegal deportations to gulags and third countries, the violence against so many federal departments, against the law, the climate, the public lands, waters, civil rights, reproductive rights...

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

The most striking thing about the LA protests is how many people just dropped everything to show up and yell at federal agents. There are people in suits, and carrying dogs, and wearing flip flops or bike helmets. These are not people who planned to do this today. But there they are.

Big misalignment between #MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) statements and slashed funding of research, which can damage this important field for a long time (pollution research) πŸ”½

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

The failure of the National Academy of Sciences USA to make a clear and unequivocal statement about the disastrous Trump administration science policies β€” it lets all of us down and dooms them to eventual irrelevance.

Today I've been helping some folks in our group submit their first scientific abstracts to a conference, and am being reminded that this is one of the best parts of my job.

New study shows soil #microplastic levels in 1979 were ca. 3000 items/kg. After 44 years, levels in pig manure or pig manure plus nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer reached 7183±568 items/kg and 5557±329 items/kg, respectively,➑️ a 180% increase. #plastic www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Most people who drink coffee appreciate the quick jolt of energy it provides. But in a new study, scientists have found that coffee may offer the much longer-term benefit of healthy aging.

Just updated my lab home page and embedded a video about our group. I'm betting I'll find a minute to do that again maybe in 2028? branderlab.net

theres a kind older gentleman who sits next to me at the cafe a few times a week, always gets a pastry and a cup of black coffee, asks "how are the funnies treating you today, mickey?" he just sat down and said "one of those ugly t*sla tanks is outside...should we get some garbage to throw at it?"

If you were to approach David Connell β€” an encounter likely to take place at a Prince George local farmers market β€” and ask him to name one thing that would make the world a better place, his answer would be simple. β€œIt would be to change the food system, to make the food system more localized.”

Help! I’m doing background research on the history of science funding in the US. Does anyone have specific info on how early biologists in the late 1800s and early 1900s US funded their research? I have the general picture but looking for citeable sources & details about individuals.
