Something a lot of people on the American left don't really want to reckon with: many Western European nations have as many, or more, police per capita than we do. For example, Spain (run by the PSOE!) has 522 officers per 100,000 people - almost 20% more than the United States.

the dipshit who owns the bird site fired three of my people to beat his chest about "saving money" and further aggrandize his own Greenland-sized ego. I wouldn't go back if you paid me a billion dollars.

not sure there's a more embarrassing profession than ICE agent. Oh, you dress like a soldier to abduct sous chefs and throw flashbangs at protesters? Get a real job you loser

We’ve lionized “disruptors” for too long rather than celebrating people who put their heads down and do hard but necessary work. Becoming an expert in your field and working out how to make iterative/evolutionary gains over the course of your career isn’t splashy but it’s how progress is made.

there are two types of people who worked for DOGE: malicious wreckers who wanted to destroy government, and credulous dipshits who understand nothing about government. both of them should be ruthlessly mocked and permanently shunned.

Three quarters of a trillion dollar budget, but they're beggaring barracks to pay for the border? This is why screaming about rapidly expanding defense budgets now gives me the shudders. It will be profoundly wasted in large part.

the "suckers and losers" who fight our country's wars can't even get a place to sleep that doesn't leak, but what we really need is another tax cut for millionaires.

told y’all. some UNBELIEVABLE clown shit. 🤡🤡🤡

GEN George “struggled to endorse the transfer of $ from barracks to the border &conceded that maintenance of living qrtrs for jnr enlisted troops will likely take a hit.‘Obviously, redirecting has an impact—…If we took $1B out of barracks, we'd be able to fix less barracks’ @stevenbeynon.bsky.social

It could not be more obvious what is happening if they hired sky writers.

One after another access journalist is reporting a convo with Trump where Trump says Musk has a problem. None asked why Trump let him have unfettered access to the govt, and our data, for the last four months, then. And what he'll do to make sure Musk didn't do permanent damage.

Sure, he’s polling at 18% favorability, has no impulse control, is actively working to dismantle the government, and at times over the last year lashed out at Jews, black people, and trans people. But what if he was working for us?

The Times is a big paper. There are many thoughtful writers there doing really good work. Unfortunately most of your subscription goes to paying for the people who soft-focus nazi pedophiles or write op-eds titled “I Personally Respect Trans People, Just A Little Less Than Dogs.” Cancel your sub

Who fired or forced out hundreds of thousands of government employees whom he declared had "low productivity jobs", gutting government services and destroying the lives of hard-working Americans?

Even if the Musk-Trump feud is permanent, he will have already done incalculable damage to federal programs, workers and civilians. But it's even worse than that—he's installed a framework and a logic that will *continue* to tear apart the federal government. Musk's job has already been automated.

Your reminder that Humboldt Fog cheese, Humboldt County, CA, the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti),and the Humboldt Current that allows wine grapes to grow in Chile are all named for an 18th C gay scientist whose love letters were all burned and who left his entire estate to his “valet.” 🏳️‍🌈

not sure how to handicap the chances of a related riot but it’s not zero

RETVRN and embrace Thompson Ramo Wooldridge thought. "Give us tons of money and we'll build really neat space stuff with no ideological baggage" sounds like a solid plan right about now.

“Generated alternative views in its best moments” is just a braindead way to think about expertise

I've covered the President's FY 2026 Budget earlier, but this afternoon I spent some time looking at the specifics of the Interior Department's own 2026 Budget. This is where all the details relevant to the National Park Service are listed. Once again, it's not pretty. #nationalparks #parkchat

It took just 15 years to get from Citizens United to this

oh my god

RIP NBA on TNT

LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

An early Father's Day dinner with the man responsible for instilling in me a love and respect for our public lands - and the Great Basin in particular.

If you go through Escalante Country without having dinner at Hell's Backbone, what are you even doing with your life?
