#LNLRND After the Civil War, some Democrats moved south and gained elected office. Called "carpetbaggers", these soon established a solidly Democratic South. But after the passage of the Civil Rights Bill in 1964, many Democrats switched parties, giving control of the South to the Republicans.

#LNLRND There are other ways to do direct democracy. But this might be good time to take a break and look at the current opposition – the Democrats. Formed in 1828, the Democrats supported a strong executive. In the 1860s they split over slavery, accepting slavery, and the division of the country.

#LNLRND Under this system, the only change to Congress would be that it no longer passes legislation, but only prepares it for voting. The President's veto would no longer be needed. We might want to have a recall provision in case a new law had unintended consequences.

#LNLRND Using existing technology, we could create such a system today. Voter identification and app validation could be done at Post Offices, which are easily accessible to everyone. Post Offices could also install voting computers for use by citizens who do not own phones.

#LNLRND Incoming votes would be held by the central computer until after the due date. Then they would be counted and the results published. The new law would go into effect immediately. (Since direct voting is the "voice of the people", there is no need for the President's approval.)
