We have a four year college here so even if they go to college many stay. The town is so small the college doubles the population when in session. None of which calms the Townies' resentments.

In my little rural bubble, the problem is their lives are fine and they rarely travel, so they have nothing to compare it to and think every petty grievance they have is proof that the country is on fire. Also the mythical Welfare Queen still rankles them.
