There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university. University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

Trump fired over 1,000 National Park staff in February, and most still haven’t been reinstated. The $45 million he’s wasting on a military parade for his birthday could have paid their salaries for over a year.

This white genocide debacle highlights another reason to be extremely cautious of AI that I don't see people talking about much--if you're getting your information from AI, your knowledge will be selectively curated by the people who control the AI

overton window moved so far right it's just floating in the air like a dali painting

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.

For everyone who was like ā€œGoogle search is getting worse,ā€ we were absolutely right.

Why are Dems—champions of every major policy advance since the New Deal—so deeply wedded to status-quo, poll-tested politics? The answer lies in Stafford Beers' 5-level Viable Systems Model: They lack Systems 4 & 5 dealing with future coordinating it with present. 1/25 www.salon.com/2025/05/10/w...

I hope everyone has the chance to read and digest this extremely important Naomi Klein (Shock Doctrine author) interview. She "breaks down the dark logic of Trump and Musk’s path of destruction — and what the world’s richest people really want." Outtake below. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

He fired Carla fucking Hayden The Librarian of Congress An amazing, badass, kind human being May he never know peace

Carla Hayden was just fired. Surprised they decided they wanted her on the outside rather than the inside.

inside you there are three dolls

just so we’re all clear: the reason they keep using dolls as their example is because they’re trying to frame caring about material stuff as feminine and thus inherently shameful

I would like my federal tax dollars to pay for libraries, museums, and food for hungry people, please. No thanks on the deportation flights and man-made mass death.

it will never stop being crazy that conservatives have brain poisoned people to the extent that we now have to care deeply about the results of school board elections in places where we don’t live

I’ve spent the last few years studying faith-based homelessness orgs; their values, practices, effectiveness. I’ve concluded there’s only two types: Those who, when they encounter an unhoused person, see someone they believe *needs* Jesus, And those who believe the unhoused person *is* Jesus.

BREAKING: Judge Richard Leon, a George W. Bush appointee, issues a TRO blocking the Trump administration from "dissolv[ing]" the Institute of Museum and Library Services, placing any more employees on administrative leave, or terminating any grants in the coming days.

ā€œAnd I’m like, what do you mean, you ā€˜do your own research’? You running a double-blind study in your living room, dawg?ā€ - A guy walking ahead of me with his friends on a NYC sidewalk in 2021, also my favorite overheard dialogue of the entire pandemic

A grant program administered by the Montana State Library supports accessibility, digital catalogs and other services shared by libraries across the state.

Pritzker: The reckoning is here. And now that this culture of timidity is on display, these same do-nothing Democrats want to blame our losses on the defense of Black people, trans kids, and immigrants, instead of on their own lack of guts and gumption.

"ā€œQueer employees like me, we spent the last four years being told how much we mattered, how much our leadership supported us. The Lavender Scare was treated as a horrific, regrettable period in history. But when it came time to actually stand up for us, it’s crickets."

The impacts of a trade war and strained foreign relations, particularly with Canada, introduce uncertainty to western Montana’s tourism industry.

A key difference here is that while either can be incorrect, the structure of Wikipedia *creates context* and the structure of LLMs *destroys context* Wikipedia has linked sources and an edit history showing where information came from and who added it when An LLM just generates text

THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT IS THE LAW OF THE LAND AND A SUPERSTATUTE AND THE PRESIDENT CANNOT UNDO IT. sincerely, a constitutional law professor who also teaches employment discrimination

What part of protecting yourselves don't y'all get? What haven't you gotten for the last 4+ years? It's not about what's in the grant paperwork. It's what they'll find the second they FOIA your workplace or get on your social media.

JUST IN: Judge James Boasberg is INDEED an out of control tyrant.....when it comes to footnotes

"Sense of community, free information, and a safe place to go. How are we to achieve this relying on AI?" An awesome insight from a student in my library research class.

While you're distracted by a SCOTUS case about inclusive books in schools, the new leader at the IMLS is demanding that state librarians share what their grant money is being used for. I told you this would happen, and here it is.

Holy shit, I knew things were looking grim, but not out of money in two days grim...

Pope Francis’s "Urbi et Orbi" Easter speech: ā€œHow much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized and migrants...I appeal to all those in positions of political responsibility in our world not to yield to the logic of fear which only leads to isolation from others.ā€

If Jesus had focused more on kitchen table issues and less on unpopular outcasts like lepers and prostitutes, he might have won more support from white working-class Judeans.

Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops. I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III. Remind you of anyone?

This framing of "dependence" is fucking propaganda. The whole point of the federal government is to build and maintain national institutions that promote public health, education, scientific advancement, etc. The implication here is that those functions are a matter of private not public concern.

This, by the way, is what happens when an administration loses the presumption of good faith in the jusidicary. The Supreme Court slaps them at 1:15am on Holy Saturday. If this is unprecedented, it's because 90 days in, this is the first administration ever to totally lose the courts' deference.

A co-worker of mine (who is a judge), traveled by train from Montana to North Dakota for work this week. The train made a stop in Havre, MT, where ICE agents—armed and dressed in full military-style tactical gear—boarded the train.

Montana public health officials have identified five cases of measles in Gallatin County, the first confirmed instances of the infectious disease in the state since 1990. #mtnews

Libraries aren’t failing businesses. Government isn’t a product. This piece cuts through decades of platform logic and reminds us what public systems are actually for.

Furloughed IMLS staff say only 2 of 12 still there are managing ops specific to library services. Among them is Lisa Solomson, newly appointed acting dep director of library services, a significant promotion from a project specialist role. Her spouse: Matthew Solomson, a Trump-appointed fed judge

Two MSU students lost their legal status without warning. No violations. No due process. The ACLU of Montana is fighting back. We all deserve fair treatment under the law. Learn more: Roe v. Noem.

In other words: double down on our actual missions, abandon all the capitalist business nonsense we've absorbed over the years, and FIGHT. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/o...
