Distortus rex! No, wait a minute... Distortus rex! No, that's not right either. Distortus rex! One last try. There we go.

Today's random piece of nostalgic palaeoart: Zdenek Burian's Struthiomimus! The artistic history of ornithimimosaurs is an odd one, being such a bird-like group that artists struggled to make sense of them as reptiles. Burian's Struthiomimus are a beautiful, naturalistic attempt! (1/6)

I love living in the United States. 🫩

As I tell my students, ChatGPT is an amazingly powerful tool for answering all sorts of questions, as long as you don't care whether or not the answers are correct.

Wakey wakey, Eggs & spiders? Pyrrhuloxia gobbles a tiny spider 🪶☀️🌵

New paper (and one I reviewed!): The Saimaa ringed seal from freshwater Lake Saimaa in Finland has a relatively old divergence from other ringed seals and is morphologically distinct - and represents its own species, Pusa saimensis. Loytynoja et al.: www.pnas.org/doi/epub/10....

I’ll be moving to California with my fiancée next month while she attends school, so I’m going to be open for commissions for a while to save up a little extra money for the move. Please feel free to Dm me for more details! #commission

The burial of Ghana's natural spaces under thousands of tonnes of discarded clothes from the UK (and other parts of Europe) is something every consumer should know about. Fast fashion is a huge environmental issue; don't buy into it. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

In this week's Walking with Dinosaurs article, I write about some of our supporting cast - azhdarch pterosaurs and Edmontosaurus! Once again featuring some of my concept work. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a...

This will always be my godzilla, and these will always be my godzilla films. Bright, sun-soaked tropical adventure films with lots of giant bugs and tons of primary colours everywhere.

Excited to share a new #OA paper in @journalofanatomy.bsky.social detailing evolution and development of hemibacula: bizarre mineralized elements in hemipenes of croaking geckos. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #GeckoEvoDevo #Aristelliger

CONFIRMED: Discovery of human footprints in alluvium dated to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) at White Sands, New Mexico…spans >23.6 thousand years to ~17.0 thousand calibrated years before present, providing another line of evidence further supporting the validity of an LGM age for the tracks.

Another new horseshoe crab, this time the first known Silurian species, filling a 63 million year gap in the horseshoe crab fossil record. This specimen was actually found by Sam Ciurca 50 years ago - another example of the importance of museum collections! ⚒️🧪 doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

CLARIFICATION : The Trevor Project's hotline will still be live. But basically this means LGBTQ people can no longer be connected to it through the US national 988 suicide prevention hotline. They will need to be contacted DIRECTLY So spread this around They can be texted. They can be called.

Seems like it’s “give trans people money day” and it couldn’t hurt to ask, every penny goes towards saving for an emergency fund for me and my family to leave the US if things keep getting more dangerous. ko-fi.com/sophiesaurus

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology... Flight evolved in Dromaeosauridae, Archaeopterygidae, Anchiornithidae, Scansoriopterygidae, & whatever #Rahonavis is. Here are #Archaeopteryx & #Anchiornis from DINOSAUR BEHAVIOUR, by Benton (@princetonupress.bsky.social). #SciArt #PaleoArt #Dinosaurs #Raptor

Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator. 🧪🌎

Felt inspired to do a piece inspired by paleoart aesthetics that were common when I was growing up. This is mostly based on a particular one by Mark Hallet, though I think I channeled some other influences as well. #SciArt #paleoart #artbyjulio

It's World Crocodile Day and I conveniently just finished my skeletal of Deinosuchus hatcheri, a gigantic crocodylian (or near crocodylian) from Campanian Laramidia. This has been in the works for a long time and it feels good to have it done. #WorldCrocodileDay #dinosaurs #paleoart #Deinosuchus

Here's a longer version of the Agami Heron courtship display, in full 4K! The males will literally do this display all day long. At first, I thought that these were males that couldn't get a date, but we've realized that it's new birds arriving at the rookery. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWqg...

That old idea where glyptodonts are the cousins to ALL #armadillos? Nope. It was mostly overlooked until recently, but armadillo experts have been pushing the idea that glyptodonts are nested _within_ armadillos since at least 2006. 🐊 It is world croc day! 🐊

The Alt National Park Service account calls itself the official "resistance" team of the US National Park Service. With 887k followers, is one of the biggest accounts on Bluesky. It is the 11 most followed account according to some trackers. This thread will dive into its activity. 🧵 1/x.

Federal govt is obviously cooked so let's keep celebrating conservation wins at the state level. To wit: Oregon legislature just voted to close beaver trapping on public-land streams the state considers "impaired" — a huge recognition of beavers' restorative powers! westernlaw.org/oregon-lawma...

Today is #WorldCrocodileDay and to celebrate here is Plesiosuchus mansellii, a super interesting marine crocodilian relative that lived during the Late Jurassic in Europe Plesiosuchus was a thalattosuchian, a group of crocodylomorph that evolved extreme aquatic adaptations #paleoart #art

Here's a fun article I wrote for the BBC about how we shot the fight scenes in "Band of Brothers", Ep3 of the new BBC and PBS series #Walkingwithdinosaurs in which I pretend to be a dinosaur. Series available now on BBC iPlayer and launching 06/16 on @pbs.org www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a...

It’s really tiring, isn’t it, being scared and upset all the time

I refuse to give the NYT my eyeballs, so I can't speak to the specifics of this article. But any historians attempting to use AI for either writing or research should be run out of the field. AI is inherently unable to do anything we need it to do to understand and communicate history.

From my Ancient Archives; two horrifying sea monsters meet. Always loved squid; I wanted to be a teuthologist when I was a kid, before choosing to pursue art. At the time of painting the giant squid had never been filmed alive, leaving the possibilities of our first encounter wide open...

The young Ceratosaurus up for auction was found by a commercial outfit, acquired by Utah’s Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point, and then last year removed from the collection and sold to a private operator with a long-standing relationship with the museum. People have questions. 🧪🦖

Thankgiving Point should be ashamed for themselves. The whole things seems like an inside boondoggle. Selling museum specimens that you won’t let people work on so you can sell them for big bucks is hugly problematic (private land or not). www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/s...
