& things like tutorials seem overhated when people are stuck on specific examples and aren't thinking of all the games that onboarded them so smoothly they didn't notice it

so much of this thread seems stuck in the mindset of catering to non-gamers meaning: bogging down your game with tedious tutorials, "hand-holding", etc. but it doesn't have to be that way! obviously lots of creative design space here and it's disappointing to see the prevailing opinion is otherwise

i like how most of these are written like "XYZ normal" but then mental status just has "She is alert"

this is obviously not the be-all end-all of creating games but it's nice to know there's a group of people who have organized around enjoying shared features of certain games, who will seek out new games exploring similar territory. picking names which aren't silly is an unsolved problem here

i also dislike the term (as i dislike "metroidvania") but as with many game genre descriptors it seems its purpose is in finding an audience. i used "metroidbrania" as a tag for a game i just made & it got picked up by a much larger audience than i expected, moreso than if i'd said puzzle

and finally, this game probably wouldn't have been made without the art and aesthetics of games by @sylviefluff.bsky.social and @aria.garden

sorry am now realizing im guilty of a textwall. read some of your replies re: arch already & also had some thoughts. what comes in above arch for you?
comment in response to post
i was thinking about arch earlier today its probably the only linux distro id want to daily drive atm, though i do want to try some of the bigger systemd-free ones and esp alpine seems good for hosting

think i still need to watch this one but at a glance it reminds me of his old april fools video if u havent seen it youtu.be/0NLmJ7aXHIc?... secret story if you turn on captions. also disclaimer that i havent seen this since high school and dont remember it lol

do you have any recs for more amateur spritework? ive only really used gimp (long ago) -> random online sprite tools (not a great workflow) and asprite seemed like a worthwhile commitment.. but the stuff in this thread is disappointing to hear

this is unfortunate though bc i think banjo achieves this to great effect, the fact that you need to return to the start of the level to exit and the notes resetting when you die/leave make the levels have more impact vs. being able to just come and go as you please and optimizing for collection

hey- could just be the bsky mobile app but the itch link seems broken here, think its cut off early by the ellipsis

had to find but see eg. tyler glaiel on this- x.com/TylerGlaiel/...

in the general case loading everything into memory is only *good* for performance and load times since you only need to load from disk once (at startup). unless your assets are seriously large or you're working in a memory constrained environment its probably best to just load the entire game

it seems cool to me as like a one time novelty thing in the same way that eg. speedrun category extensions are cool. but its definitely not needed to accompany an ordinary playthrough lol

this sounds pretty cool - i may be doing something similar during the holiday season though it may end up being more physics-y (grokking light & fluid stuff). what sort of math are you planning on studying

think “indie” suffered a similar fate in music, movies etc. where the emerging aesthetic became the target aesthetic and the term became more used for marketing (eg. with A24 or any number of bands branded as “indie rock” as an attribute of their music vs. their circumstances)
