Mine would have to be Charles Laughton, despite having directed only one film.

Plus, one of my all-time favourite album covers. Seriously suave.

If you have genuine talent, your audience will eventually find you. Unfortunately, the art world is even uglier than the music world. I’m glad she persevered, and I’d love to see her work.

That’s a lifetime of being shunned, but it’s good that she lived to see the day - which, sadly, is seldom the case. Congrats to your friend!

WPA artists - and art - gets regularly and criminally overlooked. Much of 30 Rock was WPA (and stunningly gorgeous).

I can’t think of any reasons to doubt that.

It’s been that way since at least 1962... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykrY...

Been doing that one live since the 1980s, or thereabouts… if memory serves?

Been hoping (against hope) since 2009, when he released Préliminaires. Unfortunately, he feels trapped by expectations, but I’m with you – I’d LOVE to see him dim the lights, pull up a stool, and croak like a croc!

That’s half the battle sorted...

Really wish he’d do a crooning tour - he’s got the perfect voice for it, and I’m always a big fan of flying in the face of expectations…

Spent a hell of a lot of time in there, over the years.

Never appreciative, she’s captive! Until she can walk, you might as well mess about with open tunings and drone notes…

Good job. She’ll reap the benefits of having been raised right.

And criminally obscure or unknown here, stateside.

An all-time favourite of mine. Repeated viewings diminish nothing!

Would do, but you’ve beaten me to it. No other film comes close.

Why be so literal when, with a bit of imagination, a parakeet will do nicely?

That’s the lone thing that I really appreciate about that “look” – it was fairly easy for the financially-challenged-but-hugely-impressionable segment of the fan-base to emulate with a passable accuracy.

Great song, but no surprise that his European-Airline-Baggage-Handler look never caught on amongst the masses.

Congrats on copping the vinyl. Forced to rate and rank, possibly my favorite J&MC album, with “Black” being my favorite J&MC track.

Doesn’t it completely suck that different people have differing opinions?

Sound advice. Any creative outlet, by definition, must be selfish. Once you begin playing other people’s games, it’s over.

Thanks, that’s my kind of pilgrimage!

From one massive Hamilton fan to another, I envy you!

God bless him! I’m really glad he’s still out there and still rocking.

Seventy? How’s that possible?!

I’ll take glimmers of hope wherever I find them, these days. Enjoy your return to the UK, and here’s hoping you finally make it up north!

Absolute class. Absolute cool.

Serious bonus points for the Gem Spa tee!

My east coast prejudices are completely futile against this one. A total classic.

That beer was completely ubiquitous when I was a kid growing up in Cincinnati. Conversely, not many people know the band. Still regret not seeing them here in NYC when I had the chance[s]. Dion, backed by members of The Dictators – do things even get much better than that?!
comment in response to post
Never the beer, the band is better!

Says it all, really, doesn’t it? Very very good, and brand new to these ears. Thanks!

Used to see him often in the late 1980s - a total gent and always good for a lovely chat.
comment in response to post
That, sir, is an incredibly good point!

Why so lenient?

I’ve actually never seen that, but I’ve no reason to not trust that you’re correct!

She turned in a stunning performance, as did Jean-Hugues Anglade, and the Director's Cut gave them both plenty of room to shine. I’m just not sure that I would’ve initially seen it as a 3-hour film... I was an impatient 20-year old! But yes, “butchered” is exactly right, sadly.
comment in response to post
Same, and the storyline made so much more sense than the theatrically-released version. Intricacies matter.
comment in response to post
One of those rare instances of something being well worth the three-hour investment! And yes, much sadder.
comment in response to post
Especially the 3-hour Director’s cut. Much closer to the novel.

Having had a signed box that’s been lost is my heavy burden of shame.

“If George says it’s good, then it’s good by George!” If there’s ever been a finer tagline, I’ve sure never read it.

Two of the benefits of being stateside back then, I suppose, and I’m thankful that I took advantage of the fact. Still, I envy the gigs you must’ve had ready access to.
comment in response to post
I caught so many Blasters and Scorchers gigs in the early- and mid-1980s... neither band ever failed to tear the roof off.
comment in response to post
This one was my introduction to his work. One of those pieces that I just want to disappear into.

Many happy returns of the dan…

Right?! I was astonished to learn that he was American.
