I mean all you have to do is hire a contractor to work on your house/condo/whatever and then actually talk to the guys doing the work.

It's also time to admit that a lot of what comes off the boats from China is crap we can do without.
Of course some of it is important. But if 50%+ of the shipping containers just fell into the ocean, it would make approximately zero difference to how our society functions.

And also much of the housing itself is in such bad condition that it should no longer even be counted as habitable/vacant.

I think the Deep Cut comment here is to note that the world should probably breathe a sigh of relief if the Qataris are the puppermasters from now thru 2028.

Turns out the traditional culture on the Subcontinent is very male-centric and sexist!

They really think people from Central America are like the Goths crossing the Danube.

These freaks are Evangelical "Christians" at heart and should just admit it to themselves.

Calvinism sucks so badly.

Someone should tell Cernovich that they're not going to become Orthodox, they're going to become Evangelical "Christians" which is what they really are anyway.
comment in response to

Many of them will sooner or later decamp to identify themselves as evangelical "Christians".
Which, tbh, good riddance.

I think the White House is literally laughing at these organizations that meekly submit and comply.
And frankly, I can't blame them for laughing.

I've said it before but if your organization or university or whatever has a valid contract with the USG and the USG doesn't pay and there's no termination option in the contract, then why wouldn't you sue for contractual enforcement???
These organizations and universities seem incredibly wussy.

I don't really want to argue with you, but you seem overly focused on medical science. Harvard has been educating students since 1636. Modern medical research is just not a foundational or core part of what Harvard is or does. When most people think of Harvard, they don't think of medicine.

Building a winning coalition in *any* democracy requires including people with terrible policy views and vicious politics.
comment in response to

I gotta say, medical research is not the core function of Harvard University. It's a nice-to-have for sure.
But let's say Harvard had to spin off its medical research functions. Someone else would step in and operate them.
Wouldn't be a catastrophe by any means.

I mean yes, it's the job of the current administrators to sound the alarm. But the doomer scenarios will not come to pass. Hard decisions will be made, adjustments will be made, the institution will survive and in a few years it will thrive...
comment in response to
post
I'm sorry but no, there is no scenario where Harvard University goes into a "death spiral".
You guys need to keep perspective. Think about Oxford and Cambridge and all the ups and downs they've gone through over 800 (!) years.
The next few years may be lean, but Harvard will be Harvard.
comment in response to
post
Yeah (and btw I'm an alum) if you mean "Could it continue in its exact current form?" without federal funds, then sure, the answer is no it couldn't.
But would it survive as a very prestigious institution that does a ton of things, of course it would live indefinitely without a dollar from the feds
comment in response to
post
I mean, I'm on Harvard's side here, but I also think its a severe understatement to say they could stay afloat "for a little while".
The truth is Harvard will be fine even if it never receives another dollar from the federal government.

Kind of darkly funny how their first bankruptcy process turned out to be just an asset-stripping and pocket-lining for the benefit of the lawyers and corporate execs.

Israel better enjoy the support it gets from the US for now because it ain't gonna last.

Totally agree.
Anglophone commentators for some reason *love* to lecture Italy specifically on fiscal policy and politics generally.
The Economist has been sniping at Italian leaders for 30 years!
It's just something they do to feel better about themselves, imo.

There's nothing better than 1920's eight-plexes and 12-plexes but unfortunately most cities zoned that stuff out of existence.

Also, very few developers now are also landlords, or vice versa. It's become a specialized field to be a developer.
comment in response to

A lot of developers are crappy people but also a lot of developers these days are actually good people. It's a mixed bag like any other field.

Exactly. The biggest reason I stopped regularly going to Starbucks was the infuriating situation where they'd be making mobile orders one after another while completely ignoring the customers actually in the store. Totally insulting and idiotic.
