my dudes there's no such thing as "too late" to regulate AI, that's a fake idea. AI models aren't untouchable data gods, they're algorithms hosted in cloud storage. Saying we can't regulate AI is like saying we can't deplatform Child P*rn bc "it's already out there". Like, 1s and 0s can be deleted

Was very excited when Last Week Tonight asked @404media.co to help out with research/fact checking for an AI Slop segment that ran last night. I thought it turned out very good! Here's a few mentions of our reporting, and the full segment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWpg...

The heat is on! A few afternoon or early evening t'storms may provide a bit of relief to some, otherwise expect temps to peak in the mid 90s with heat indices in the mid 100s. Be sure to follow the important heat safety tips attached! (No really, stay cool and hydrated.)

Got a few minutes to lament those extra seasons of Rome we never got? You'll weep like Tiro as Pullo wields the blade on Cicero. youtu.be/1cIVJD1cmbk?...

🌞Happy solstice everyone!🌞 Today I’m sharing one of my favourite sunny illos to mark the occasion - my artwork of the Ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Bassae🇬🇷 🏺#AncientBluesky

This is kind of a weirdly personal one: a bit of wish-fulfillment about a big, beautiful old house riddled with ghosts, friendly and...otherwise. The author's note is only half true; Dad was happy with girls and happy to help us learn whatever we wanted, so this one's for him, too 👇

Guys, @cheriepriest.com can transform even a cozy tea kettle into a thing of abject horror, so when she says something's a real project of her heart we should preorder the darn book already. Which can be done here: bookshop.org/p/books/it-w... (See also? Cinderwich! bookshop.org/p/books/cind... ☠️🍃)

Thanks for the shout-out re: IT WAS HER HOUSE FIRST ❤️

Spitting FIRE holy shit 🔥

Studying the carbon isotopes of fatty acids in pot residues has revealed that humans consumed milk in Britain from 4000BC and as long ago as 7000BC in Anatolia, a region in Turkey known for its farming during the Neolithic period. #cheese #news 🧀 #history #science #archaeology #food

I need everyone on Normal People internet to know that American Girl Doll Instagram is doing doll protests today. There are tiny t-shirts and signs. AND THEN I realized it's a joint protest with the Barbie ppl, where there are EVEN TINIER SIGNS.

That’s an arrest.

Listen up.

This seems like a great day to remind Bluesky that Stephen Miller lived four doors down from me freshman year And our student council person asked him (and everyone) to sign a birthday card for our dorm’s janitor And he threw a tantrum and wrote an op-ed about not socializing with “the help.”

She Survived Genital Cutting, Then Shared Her Reconstruction on TikTok Shamsa Sharawe made her name campaigning against female genital cutting. Then she heard about surgery to rebuild what had been taken from her. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/02/w...

one of the most important things I drill home for new/young writers is that Everyman(tm) does not exist, but the specific IS the universal; and addressing specific details/needs - even if they don’t apply to everyone - is still a concrete way to build interest, empathy, and audience.

Jesus his publisher stole 14,000 GBP from him

The Luddites had a great phrase for what they opposed: "Machinery hurtful to commonality." It's an excellent reminder that being a Luddite doesn't mean you hate technology, but that you hate the way capitalists create and use technology to destroy community and human flourishing.

This entire thing is such a shitshow. I really wish that (a) publishers wouldn't spend author royalties and (b) that they would just be fucking honest about it so that people who think they'll be getting $8000 to pay bills on May 31st don't find out on May 30th.

Antivaxx and libertarianism are the same--they can exist only when the majority of the population buys in to what it takes to live in a society, allowing the minority to think they are outsiders thriving on their own exceptionalism.

I feel this way about stories

My plans for a major retail emporium are being threatend by wholesalers who won't let me steal the stock.

If you think COVID vaccines should continue to be available to all: take 5 min and add your comments at the link below. (Advice for what to say in the linked thread.)

Our standard three-act story structure tells us that things will get worse and worse, until some massive confrontation — after which they'll be great. This expectation is really bad for us, especially when during this current traumatic moment. My latest newsletter: buttondown.com/charliejane/...

This is not an idle threat, either. Most publications will not only fire you, they will blacklist you for using AI. Some of our fields are small, and we talk, mostly because we tend to run in the same circles. You will be found out.

Can we have a real talk about AI… how the fuck is everyone not disturbed as I am? Why the fuck would you kill our planet faster just to make some dumb shit? How can people possibly consume AI content like it’s normal? I truly don’t understand how normalized it’s become and it’s scaring me

Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water. A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

What Chels said. I am tired of pretending that there’s an inch of respect I have for people who use genAI bots to produce work. Yes, even ‘just to get an idea’. Yes, even ‘only for first drafts’. I will never trust your judgment or your work product. And yes, I can tell when you use it.

Fantastic piece from @dahlialithwick.bsky.social on the tide finally starting to turn: "But what really matters—what is measurable and knowable now in a way that was not a few weeks ago—is that standing up to Trump is going to be worth it." slate.com/news-and-pol...

For the afternoon crowd! Good news for a great little shelter in rural Tennessee, courtesy of the internet and the World's Goodest Boy 👇

It's actually wild. There's literally no mention of why Jackie Robinson is important in the MLB press release. At all. Just that he "played his first Major League game on April 15, 1947."

A frustrating article that, for all its length, omits: - kids’ perspectives - the Lost Girls generation www.theguardian.com/society/2020... - racial bias in diagnosis - medication shortages - overlap with autism & sensory processing - anxiety & depression as *consequences*, not comorbidities

Ah the fall of the Roman empire in *checks notes* 40CE.

What if a eulogy, but 80% funny (I hope)? If you want to skip the potentially sad parts, just click through and scroll to the bottom - and rather than condolences, please consider a donation to the tiny no-kill shelter in Tennessee where we met Greyson as a pup. www.cheriepriest.com/blog/the-wei...

the only AI session I cared about at #acrl2025

The thing about so-called generative artificial intelligence is, the intelligence isn't artificial. It's real. It's OURS. The techbros stole our intelligence (our data, our thoughts, our stories, our art) and used the software to regurgitate it and spackle it together into digital particleboard.

What we need is for everyone to talk like this the moment one of these losers starts their stupid culture war bullshit.
