Unicore is now published on GBE 🚀 Unicore rapidly identifies structural single-copy core genes from input species proteomes for phylogenetic analysis. Powered by Foldseek and ProstT5, Unicore enables linear-scale structure-based phylogeny of any given set of taxa. 🧵1/n 📃 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evaf109

📢 We’re delighted to announce that Professor Emma Thomson has been appointed as the new Director of the CVR. An internationally recognised expert in emerging infectious diseases, Emma will continue to lead the CVR in its role in national and global pandemic response. www.gla.ac.uk/research/az/...

Planning to apply for #research #funding from the ERC? From the next application rounds, expect changes to the: • proposal structure • evaluation process • extra funding you can request • eligibility for Starting & Consolidator #Grants (from 2027) More 👇 europa.eu/!RPHWvv

I wrote a new thing about Bobby Kennedy's crusade against vaccines in the context of H5N1. He trashed Moderna, and if there's a pandemic, he'll cash in on that decision. rasmussenretorts.substack.com/p/great-week...

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

very nice work from the @fviromics.bsky.social and Baric labs uncovering some of the ways these merbecoviruses can use ACE2 as their entry receptor! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Our study screening the majority of all published Merbecovirus RBD’s for cell entry phenotypes is now published in Nature Communications! (1/5) shorturl.at/gYz4E

You might be wondering why we haven't updated outbreak.info for months. Well, the reason is that GISAID cut our access in January - as they did others. Without telling us. After a ♾️ back and forth, that is now permanent. More on that soon - and why GISAID should not be trusted with critical data.

Target-rich environment, this speech. 1/n

Happy to share this interview with Weijie Zhao from NSR at #OxfordUniversityPress. It covers questions I’m often asked—why I chose Korea, AlphaFold2, my unconventional journey into academia, and research insights. Thanks again for the fun conversation. 📄 academic.oup.com/nsr/article/...

A wee summary of our paper: Tim and Juraj’s landmark paper from 2020 was the first to elucidate the structural and biochemical detail of RNF213, the largest known E3 and only AAA-E3 hybrid. Among many observations, two stood out: E3 activity was RING-independent and specific for the E2 UBE2L3.

Delighted to give the first talk of my PhD at the UK Hepacivirus and Flavivirus Meeting over the weekend, where I talked about using ML to understand arbovirus evolution 🦟! Thank you to the organising committee and in particular my supervisors @maringerlab.bsky.social & @grovearmada.bsky.social

Outbreaks of Marburg virus (MARV) disease have been increasingly more frequent recently. Here we describe a prefusion-stabilized MARV GP and a best-in-class MARV neutralizing antibody! Led by @aminaddetia.bsky.social with @virbiotechnology.bsky.social @hhmi.org www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

EXCITING NEWS – Nature Health Global is delighted to announce a SURPRISE dollar-for-dollar match “Challenge Fund” from an anonymous donor today naturehealthglobal.org/exciting-new...

Had a great fun at @rdrpsummit.bsky.social! The field of RNA virus discovery is gaining momentum and this community is in the forefront. New ideas and collaborative projects begin here, usually from a friendly conversation :)

The CoVFit paper is now published @natcomms.nature.com !! Exciting work led by Jumpei Ito really showing the potential of pLMs for genotype-2-phenotype predictions!! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Today, the ERC formally adopted a decision to increase its support for researchers moving to Europe. On top of its normal grants, the ERC offers 'start-up' funding to help PIs establish laboratories / research teams in Europe. This extra funding is now x2 (up to €2 million!) europa.eu/!6Vdgmp

Spoke with Katy Brown at ViBiom @evbc.bsky.social —she’s uncovering the hidden diversity of RNA virus RdRp fossilized as endogenous viral elements (EVE). “We’ve only begun to uncover their true diversity.” www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

What a great few days at #ViBioM2025 seeing the latest in virus bioinformatics and meeting the awesome people that made it. Stunning setting at Lisbon Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical🦟💉, great company 🎉 and great science 🧬💻! Bring on next year's meeting @evbc.bsky.social!

The world’s richest people are disproportionately responsible for climate impacts such as extreme heat and drought https://go.nature.com/4jYZGhW

Another week another conference!🎯 #ViBioM2025 here we go! Looking forward to hear and talk about the newest virus bioinformatics developments!👩🏽‍💻 But first enjoying the beautiful city of Lisboa. What a work-life balance!☀️

Great time in Lisbon so far at @rdrpsummit.bsky.social ! Looking forward to another day of great talks and discussing the future of RNA virus discovery! + #ViBioM2025 starting tonight! Can't wait to see lots more friends! 😁😁

Great thread by Spyros on this long-in-the-making paper which I also contributed to — a deep dive into the timing and origins of both SARS-CoVs👇

A great thread on such an important paper. One that really helps us take a more holistic look at sarbecovirus diversity and recombination-directed evolution in the horseshoe bat reservoir. Ignoring won't help, as I can't imagine the last chapter on human spillover of these has been written.
