One of the first issues I reported when I came into the climate beat is high water intensity of coal power plants. It is a less-discussed issue compared to CO2 emissions & air pollution. What makes it worse is the lack of independent oversight & monitoring in India www.indiaspend.com/barely-regul...

As we look back on World Oceans Day, remember: our fossil fuel combustion adds about 14 zettajoules of extra heat to the oceans every year. Mankind’s entire energy production is only half a zettajoule.

Here is the collection of over 250 ideas for teaching the waves topic from KS3 to A-Level. Follow the link to access them all: www.teachphysics.org/home/waves-i... Thanks to all who contributed and especially @ogdentrust.bsky.social for funding my time to make it. #ITeachPhysics #SciTeachUK

Every dictatorship requires a boogeyman that justifies suspending civil liberties and arresting the opposition. It doesn't really matter who the boogeyman is. It's a means to an end

These are working out ... a bit too well. The pants feel so light that I get an occasional fraction-of-a-second panic (especially when mentally occupied with something) and look down to check that I'm actually wearing pants!

The camera is mightier than the gun.

In order to eliminate any inconvenience to cars, we’ve made it illegal for children to be children

Does anyone know why an apple appstore app version submitted can be in the "ready for review" state untouched for a week? ... and whether there is a way to nudge it along?

An Emerging Risk To #RadioAstronomy 📡 Using a prototype SKA-Low instrument, a new analysis from @icrar.bsky.social has detected Starlink signals leaking into protected radio bands. @cosmicrami.com writes about this new study. www.spaceaustralia.com/news/emergin... 📸 Astro_Work 🔭 #SpaceAustralia

1/ Since it's open season on the Chinese in the US right now, I wanted to post about a remarkable Chinese-American experience that is one of the real gems of New England, making the region and country better in every way. It's about jazz and blues music. ↵

As many of us people who study or work in tech tried to tell y’all, move fast & break things was always about POWER, not progress.

#TechieKural #TrainKural Of what use are the eyes of that programmer who misses reading a stack trace to identify the problem with their code.

While the US has a historical obsession with pointing a collective finger at one person who if removed would result in normalcy, it is the more-than-half of voters who will have blood on their hands. Not just in the US, in India too where it is happening in slow motion.

Only got 3 hours of sleep rip but nice progress today! Next up, stars. Love how the triangles are different colors yet blend in. That’s bc this supernova remnant is a composite image from multiple telescopes, & each triangle is like a cross section at a certain part of the electromagnetic spectrum ✨

Our approach to climate change summed up in one photo from @mprnews.org . 🫠

Given these "thinking" tokens can also be confabulations, maybe we could call them "Trump tokens".

There hope in the next generation ... or will we kill that through "education"?

Brands during Pride month: 🌈 Exxon: no matter who you love, we’ll make sure your children don’t have a livable planet 🌈 Amazon: we treat all of our warehouse workers like dirt, regardless of their sexual orientation 🌈 Raytheon: our tomahawk missiles don’t discriminate

Happy #WorldBicyclingDay ! Enjoy your rides today and every day.

startupwired.com/2025/05/30/b... "While the company marketed itself as an AI-powered platform, much of the actual software development work reportedly came from human developers based in India." - the grift is reminiscent of ~2000 .. & likely does disservice to the real utility of LLMs for SW dev.

It's kind of funny how these "projections" are thrown around so casually 'cos none of the other party countries seem to be saying anything about them.

If, like me, you've been itching to have a poke around in the API traffic from Claude Code to see how it works under the hood... Mario Zechner built a delightful tool for doing exactly that https://simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/2/claude-trace/

"The message is clear: we have lost a great deal in our collective efforts to accommodate the automobile. We have lost so much that some can't even see it."

Got myself some cricket attire - pants and t-shirts - 'cos they're super comfortable for #Chennai heat, especially during summer and if you do anything outdoorsy at all like biking. Highly recommend. Decathlon has some good options and so does Sportus.

Why the science of weather prediction matters. "N Ravi, a cowpea farmer in Mandya’s Alakere, says they had received inputs from the agriculture dept regarding early & above normal monsoon; so, we had prepared our fields by April-end itself." www.deccanherald.com/india/karnat...

Recently replaced batteries on my bike meter after about a year, so the odometer only recently started rolling again. This covers perhaps < 3 years of biking. I bike mostly for commute in #Chennai, so if I'd used a car, that's ₹70k atleast in fuel savings and approx 2tonnes of CO² emissions avoided?

Ms Rachel said actually no I will not shut up

Naur's essay is one of those writings in CS that's aged very well. As relevant today as ever. Reconstructing a program from its code is like reconstructing a symphony from its notation.
