If more NYC voters prefer Mamdani over Cuomo, regardless of how many other candidates are running, then ranked-choice voting has done its job, and well. The alternatives are a second, run-off election if no candidate gets a majority, or a mayor elected by a ~35% plurality with no popular mandate.

Australia has the right to leave AUKUS following a 1yr notice period, though it would require forfeiture of the hundreds of millions of dollars invested so far. That would also leave it without a replacement for the Collins, now in end-of-life but possibly extended to mid-2030's, but not longer.

This would be fine if Fishers builds it up with mixed-use development and five-over-ones two blocks deep along Connecticut and 101st, but they won't because of NIMBY's. Their property tax gain won't keep up with the service and maintenance costs.

Carmel had the advantage of a pro-development mayor, Jim Brainard, for decades. Many of the Monon projects that are going up now were planned during his administration. The new mayor has promised much more 'community-input' to planning decisions, so we can expect more NIMBYism in Carmel's future.

This seems like a missed opportunity for the Economist to have featured one of their best illustrators, Klawe Rzeczy, on the cover.
