Our deeper analysis of Budget 2025's implication for science is out. It's worse than a nothing burger. It's a black hole budget pushing many areas towards the bring where they'll never recover, with funds going to pay for regulation and restructuring. scientists.org.nz/news/13502878

There's no cap on Investment Boost. It's mind-boggling. Pitched as a policy backing hardworking Kiwi SMEs, in reality it's tax cuts for billion-dollar oil rigs, fast-tracked coal mines and glittering skyscrapers. newsroom.co.nz/2025/05/24/i...

#NZpol I'd rather we not have a "pensioners not means tested vs 18/19 yr olds now" spat, as IMHO such spats are just *further atomization*, and that's actually *playing the Neolib game* using *their rules*. I'd shift it to discussing the *real* untouchable subject, *high end wealth*, to sort BOTH?

Trump administration ends Harvard's ability to enrol international students. Students part way through a degree left in limbo. Threatens university survival. Dictators always assault universities, critical thinking. Research already censored, depts shut, books banned. Silence from Congress.

This! The challenge the NZ power sector faces is entirely structural. It is (badly) designed to create a "market", and creates perverse incentives to put prices - and therefore profits - up. All this at a time when renewables should be driving prices down to the point of being too cheap to meter.

“They are people with varying degrees of issues. The government departments that would normally help us with dealing with them aren’t. “Some have just been released from prison. Some have just been released from [hospital], often little medication or a GP" www.waikatotimes.co.nz/nz-news/3606...

I am currently looking to assist free of charge people in Aotearoa who wish to challenge decisions by MSD re benefit eligibility. DM me if interested.

Budget 2025 continues the government's shift of the science sector towards more "growth-promoting investments". www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/2025/05/22/b...

Mussolini’s Italy expelled university professors who opposed fascism. Franco’s Spain replaced university academics with regime loyalists Nazi Germany removed Jewish professors & left-leaning scholars. Academia is a threat to unified ideology. It’s why fascist regimes always target it.

I hope every single one of those under 20 year-olds who got shafted in today's budget shows up to vote next year. THAT is the calculus by the Sixth National Government: less well-off young people do not show up to vote in our country. #nzpol

Managed to find a few million to subsidise private schools a bit more. We pay taxes to support public schools so we have an educated pop via compulsory schooling. If you want to privately educate your kid, fine. But leave the crowns money out of it.

Budget 2025 is a disaster for our environment. Conservation investment is MIA while 75% of native species face extinction. The Govt is gambling with $133B in natural assets and our economy. This is environmental neglect, not leadership. We demand better. www.forestandbird.org.nz/resources/no...

Lolsob development: my tax cut from last year is almost exactly the same amount as the extra 1% I'll have to give to Kiwisaver to make up for the government's smaller contribution Pay go up; pay go down a year later

Not only has NZ Govt cut funding for #Climate Commission but it's also stopped review of phase-out of free allocation given to 70 firms under emissions trading scheme, prior to any reduction in unneeded entitlements of 1.2M carbon credits, costing $68.5M/yr. #NZpol newsroom.co.nz/2025/05/21/m...

#nzpol Today’s Budget takes $12.8bn from low-income, female dominated workforces to prop up the governments failed economic policies. It's a Reverse Robin Hood Budget that steals from working people. This is a Budget that isn’t working for working people. A 🧵

A country being in surplus while it’s people are not housed and fed doesn’t even make any mathematical sense

Pretty fucking wild watching NZ's media outlets effectively running PR offensives against a random member of the public who decided to protest one of NZ's nastiest politicians rather than holding Peters to account. Filthy bootlicking behaviour from NZ's press.

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Didn't I see Peters (& Seymour) walking amongst the Parliamentary protesters back in 2022? The ones who had effigies of Jacinda being hung? Those twats? And he's now clutching his pearls? JFC, he is such a cockwombling gobshite. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Would be a shame if they did indeed end up with some billionaire of Silicon Valley. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

I just saw a good example of what I was talking about with chatgpt being a crackpot generating machine. A guy had started Wheeler's Spacetime Physics, and had a problem on page 2. Wheeler expressed a square root as a power of 1/2. √a = a^1/2. This is basic algebra, not physics.

Just watched @mihiforbes.bsky.social "crackpot conspiracy" doco on Seymour. It's nice to see the Atlas Network "conspiracy" brought into the mainstream. Vindication! The doco seemed like only the beginning of something bigger though... Is there more cooking behind the curtain, Mihi? #nzpol #bhn

“Large language models do not distinguish between fact and fiction. … They are not, strictly speaking, designed to tell the truth. Yet they are implemented in many sectors where truth and detail matter” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Mihi Forbes' documentary on Seymour is out and I'm so amped to watch it #nzpol #bhn youtu.be/QLOjiiC3P1Y?...

That one of the most powerful people in the country, the deputy Prime Minister, is calling for a man who heckled him to lose his livelihood should be setting off more alarm bells than it is

Looks like ambitious proposals to massively invest in public services (like the Green’s budget) actually would be popular with most of the country.

Making yourself look good on paper using LLM-generated code, covering letters, blog posts etc is a bit like using Brad Pitt's photo in your Tinder profile. Employers will find out soon enough.

Hate sucks. Assholes. 😢 ‘Lil Gay Out:’ Hobsonville Point Secondary School cancels LGBTQ+ event after protest threats www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/lil-gay-o...

Grenon is still determined to further enshittify the already mostly shit NZHerald. NZME agitator wants Herald’s ‘political leaning’ measured, maybe by AI newsroom.co.nz/2025/05/20/n...

Nicola Grigg informed of pay equity repeal in November; didn't tell the Ministry for Women until the day before the announcement. Says it was about the "sensitivity" of the policy - meaning she was afraid people would object #nzqt

Tautoko everything in this piece by @nicgaston.bsky.social. She lays out the core deficit that has held back public research in Aotearo for 40 years - woefully insufficient funding. This is has been the case whether National or Labour was leading the government. It has not had to be this way. 1/

Sea level rise will cause ‘catastrophic inland migration’, scientists warn

The thing I hate the most of all the many many things I hate about this pathetic loser of a man is the way he says "I disagree" about FACTS You cannot disagree about facts! The Tribunal said you breached the Treaty and the bill should be halted! "Oh I disagree" is not AN ANSWER TO THAT

Delay. Distract. Damage. All in a day’s work for this government. So…no suspension. Yet. Because control delayed still feels like control. Because messing with Māori on Parliament time has become a national sport. Just without the haka. #TePātiMāori #NZPol

From the party of 'free speech' comes the question 'can we imprison those who disagree with us'? Totally normal in an authoritarian state, so I guess that's where ACT wants to take us. #nzpol www.thepost.co.nz/politics/360...

One thing that may get missed from today. Erica Stanford admitted in response to a question in parliament that she knew the teachers pay equity claim would be affected by the move from 60% to 70% because she knew the ratio for those teachers.
