45mins from York… tempting! We’re up in Bishopsthorpe this weekend. However, I think we are going on a macro-lens Tansy beetle hunt!

I’d stop at the Mosquito. Twin engine, laminated wood ply. A beautiful shape.

I’ve collected scaphopod shells on the beach and in fossil assemblages but never seen a live one!

I should really check my hoverfly lagoons. Cut down 4pt milk bottles full of sludge which my wife eyes suspiciously!

What a haul!
I’m off to Devon in the campervan for the next few days. Campsite toilet blocks tend to leave lights on all night and they are a good place to spot creatures. A sort of built-in moth trap.

I’m away in the campervan for a few days from tomorrow night and will be taking my copy to read when curled up for the evening!

You’re right. I should have dug out my hoverflies book and checked. Not helped by the fact that we have builders in and most of my books are packed (somewhere… it’s not a big house but I can’t find anything😂).

Thank you Lisa, that is really helpful. Makes good sense too as there are permanent, dark, shallow pools a couple of metres across under the hedge which must be 6-7m deep there. Lots of places for rat tailed maggots to live their best lives!

Soooo… if I was to say:
“ E. M. Arndt, M. D. Gawryla and D. A. Schiraldi, J. Mater. Elastic, low density epoxy/clay aerogel composites Chem., 2007, 17, 3525–3529.”
Did I plagiarise that from you… or from all the papers that cited it? Madness!

I spoke at a conference years ago and we commissioned a botanical illustrator to paint Nepenthes attenboroughii, which was presented to him.
I received a print, signed by Sir David. One of my treasured things.

Are gardens eligible?
I don’t recall seeing any this year but we never use sprays etc. in the garden so it might be worth a look (only about 5 apple trees).
